Right now in the Nevada desert a race known as "Vegas to Reno", the longest nonstop point-to-point race in the country, is underway. This 550 mile course is the distance equivalent of racing from Boston to Richmond, Virginia without ever encountering a strip of pavement or a speed limit sign. Every year hundreds of vehicles and nearly a thousand drivers and co-drivers travel to the desolate Nevada desert to run this race, which runs past Death Valley, through the abandoned and mostly-abandoned mining ghost towns of Coaldale, Fort Churchill, Goldfield, Miller's, Pioneer, Rawhide, and Rhyolite, and ends in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The field of entrants is so large that at 2 pm (Eastern) the leader was at mile 100 and there were still cars leaving the start line (cars start at 30 second intervals). The winning time for the unlimited trophy trucks and unlimited buggies is usually around 9 hours, but some of the limited class cars will be racing all day, all night, and into the following day (a perfect race for my class would mean finishing in 16-18 hours).

Live scoring and updates are available through !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , along with race audio once trucks get further along the course, and possibly live finish line video this evening. A live tracking map is available through !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (you may have to refresh the page to get the vehicles to show in the dropdown box. As of race mile 100 part time NASCAR truck series driver Justin Lofton (who the tracker now shows doing 121 mph approaching mile 145) was leading, with the top 15 all within 7 minutes of him.

Sadly neither. The budget didn't come together so I had to sit it out this year. Planning to make a return next year though
