Debating between 8.5" and 9.5" wide wheels. The wheels I am looking at are 20 dollar cheaper for a set of 4 for 8.5" instead of 9.5", that's not enough to sway me but I guess, the money I save on tires, and the money I save on the wheels, is it worth it? Has anyone bought smaller width wheels and regretted not getting wider ones? The wheels on my car are 8" wide now, so both are an upgrade - in the end I won't likely notice a difference.
Actually I guess I just talked myself into 8.5" wheels nevermind

What wheels? If they have a lip and the 9.5" wheel has a larger one, get that.

Then go 8.5" for less unsprung weight.

Weight, there's a factor I missed.

While you're at it, check the weight of those wheels verses maybe another set you may have been considering. Tires too. Dropping 10lbs a corner will make massive handling and even sometimes acceleration/braking improvements.

Yeah, dropping the 10lbs would make a bigger improvement than wider tread if the tires are about the same (or, if the tires are cheaper rubber to make up for the higher price)
I'm an advocate of "only as wide as you need" wheels. Sticky rubber on thinner tires is almost universally better than cheap rubber on wide tires.
