I had a '98 I bought on the cheap because I always wanted a "cop car", and Caprices were starting to get pricey, plus the transmissions.... not as reliable. But the '98 was a city car, and was a hunk of crap, so I decided that I still wanted a P71, but... a nicer one.

So when I had finally saved up for the Vic I really wanted (2001+ PI motor, with carpet, not beat to shit) I went to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! which specialized in used police cars (duh) and only sold the best of the best. Pampered units, small town units, take home cars, etc. This one had caught my eye, and I loved the Toreador Red. It was a toss up between this, and a Desert Tan one, my other favorite color. So we packed up our 3 month old in our Mazda5 and made the 4 hour trip to Schofield, WI. I met the sales guy I had talked to numerous times on the phone, and he came in that Saturday on his day off to deliver the car to me. They had made it better than I had expected, put on a Police Interceptor badge, which had been missing, removed the wheel covers and put on center caps, at my request, and the car was washed, waxed, and gassed up. He even bought my family lunch at the diner next door!

All in all a great experience.

Anyways, I drove it for a few years, and right when gas started hitting $4 a gallon for the first time (and I had gotten the car stuck in the snow, IN MY DRIVEWAY) I decided it was time to let my dream car go, and move on to the next. One day I want to own a CVPI. The gas mileage may suck, but I think it could be fun. Plus, I could probably do an engine swap to get better fuel economy (diesel swap, anyone?).

Mine had 3:27 gears, and got 23ish on a good day. And no, I didn't baby it at all.

With 2:73's (I think that's the option) I've heard of people getting 28-30 highway.

Go for '03 and up. Better suspension and rack & pinion steering.
