I love the 914! It's my favorite Porsche.

If he was going to do an engine swap though, why not just use a better, and more powerful, Subaru boxer?

Hard to say. With all the stuff done, it seems kinda hit and miss. Not to mention the interior. Without the tea tray on the back, it might be tempting, but I think it lands pretty squarely in the cracky neighborhood. Still needs a lot of dollars to make it work.

Which is not to say that there isn't temptation.

Good point...keeping it true to Porsche, maybe?

I actually like the tea tray...then again I like spoilers and wings in general.

Ah, now that would be where we differ. I can't think of a single car that looks better with than without.

My pops really wants me to put an STI engine in mine. I really want to put batteries and electric motors in it.

Both are great options! The 914 is a popular base for EV conversions

How about an STI hybrid? :)

Well, it's been sitting long enough that it'll need something... Not to mention the fact that I don't have a garage to work in. So, poor thing still sits and waits until I'm rich.
Which is about as likely as San Francisco being cheaper than Cleveland.

Porsche made factory parts to mount the air cooled 911 motors into the 914, whereas hacking the body of the car up to add a radiator and tubing to the rear-mid engine is just that - hacking the car up.

Very intriguing car...

Is there rust? Make sure to check the battery area and fender walls.

Did he rebuild the motor himself? If so, stay away if he is selling so quickly. Does he have receipts for the work done? Does the work check out?

There's no shame in collecting as much information as possible and then asking on a site like 914world get more expert knowledge. Just try to take pictures of everything. If the owner asks questions, say you're looking for a friend that is out of town..

Going non-STI is probably the cheaper route if your work. If you go the STI route, you're looking at also adding an air-to-water intercooler due to the engine being in the back in addition to the front mounted radiator. Also, the stock transmission was built for a ~100HP engine, so to safely handle that much power, you're looking at swapping a later 911 transmission and axles. Not deal breakers but additional work and expense to keep in consideration.

TBH I think it's pretty cool, but if I had 13 grand to spend on a car right now...I'd buy a CLK 55 AMG and call it a win. Always wanted one of those. Now, if I had 20 grand...then I'd get a late 90's 911, which is what I was browsing for when I found this. But, I only had 4 grand for my recent car buy...so I bought a Mazdaspeed Protege...in which the transmission blew up after 4 days of driving, and she's been in the shop for over a month now while I hunt another one. (low mileage manuals that fit a Mazda/Ford 2.0 are scarce in these parts...)

Fun story: Shortly after I graduated, I bought a Mazda RX-8 with 3,800 miles on it, hoping to keep it at least ten years. After the motor, transmission, ECU, coil packs, starter, heater control, etc. broke on it - all before the car had 50k miles on it, and the warranty was up, I decided if I was going to spend money keeping a low mileage car running, I might as well drive something more exotic - hence I bought a Boxster and, surprised by its reliability, upgraded to a 996... What's awesome about Porsches are the forums. A lot of knowledgeable people if you're a do-it-yourself type guy. Mercedes... not so much. I tried to find the torque specs for my girl's SL500, and the response was "if your mechanic is asking you the torque specs, then you need a new mechanic!" :O
