Kinja'd!!!

Some things about your car that just don't make sense.
For whatever reason, my driver's seat belt buckle (on the right) is different from the other four. I don't understand why.

Also, for some god-forsaken reason my rear defroster is on a timer of just a few minutes. On a really rainy or snowy day I constantly have to turn it back on. Why can't it just stay on?

Also (again), to turn on the overhead light you need to turn the panel brightness switch all the way up. This screws up my brightness setting and I have to find it again.

I went on an exploratory of my car last night trying to fix random things that have been bugging me. There is a lot of non-sense. For some reason the floorpan bulges up to the seat perch so there is no room under the front seats for feet, subs, or..well anything. Upon inspection I don't see any reason for it other that to use less tall seat mounting points. There are 9 speakers in my car, but 1 isn't a center or Subwoofer. there are 4 front speakers, 2 middle seat speakers and 3 back speakers... one 5 1/2 and 2 inch on one side and only a 2 inch on the other side. The front DS seat reclines all the way to be flat with the middle seat with the headrest out but the ps side has washers welded on the fore/aft adjustment rod to limit its forward movement so it doesn't and lets not get into the other weird stuff like rear seats that fold up sideways, rear sliding windows or a separate heater core for the middle seat with its own controls and fan.

Very capable vehicles are always very quirky.

My guess is that there is some sort of safety device located inside your latch (or whatever you'd call the part that the buckle clicks into) only (whether it's a seatbelt image on the dash or an audible tone that doesn't go off until you buckle). Does the passenger buckle fit into your latch? My guess is that the shape is different since the latch is different. They could have made it look identical to the others, but perhaps this one was already available off the shelf, and they just took the easy way out.

As far as the rear defrost goes, I get annoyed when the one in my Honda goes off after I've shut off the ignition (which is a totally good idea, but I make a lot of stops), so I can imagine your frustration. Maybe they're afraid it'll catch fire?

What kind of car is this?

Oh god, so much here.

The glovebox is located behind passenger seat. the normal glove box place instead has a tiny compartment for "storing business cards"

There is no interior trunk release button.

Giant crossmember bisects the trunk. "For chassis stiffness" yet plenty of other cars manage to handle and have a usable trunk at the same time.

There are 4 cup holders. There are 2 seats.

The clutch is loud enough at idle that passengers with their windows down often ask me if there is something wrong with my car.

Weird ass car, but I love it.

the console on my 2006 dodge ram. the top surface of it seems specifically designed to prevent ANYTHING from staying on it. between the vinyl covering, and the suspension tuning, everything placed on the console will inevitably end up piled between the passenger seat and the door.

mkIV Jetta has a flip-down sunshade just above the rearview mirror.. You know for those 15min of daylight of where the sun is just in that one inch space between the top of the windscreen and the mirror.

My Outback has a gauge to the left of the tach that is the "fuel efficiency gauge" and is marked "mpg".

Kinja'd!!!

They thought it was more useful than an analog temperature gauge. All it does is go down when you mash the pedal and go up when you let off...I don't need the gauge to figure that out.

What I would like to know is if my car is about to overheat or maybe what rate the temperature is increasing. Those are just a blue light for cold and a red light when it's too late to do anything about it....

Oh, and there is an onboard trip computer that will tell you your instantaneous fuel economy if you want, so that "mpg" gauge is redundant. Awesome.

MKIV GTI as well (not surprising). Once in a while, though, very useful to flip that thing down like a sir and cure the problem.

Yeah, that's a terrible idea for a Subaru, considering the Boxer engine's propensity to blow a head gasket around 100k miles. That's what eventually did mine in...

You have no idea how long I've been thinking that car companies should do that! I always drive during those 15 minutes it seems and I hate leaning my head way off to the side to not have the sun in my eyes

Sorry to reply so late, but I stumbled over this post just minutes ago ...

Toyota went out of their way to "ruggedize" the "real" Land Cruisers so that they could withstand the stress on african washboard roads (or no roads at all). So I think you're right with the mounting points. The closer seat and the rigid floorpan are, the less "play" is within the whole system, which can otherwise show exponential wear. In addition a rather simple floorpan is easier to weld with simple tools than finicky seat stilts.
