There are plenty of automotive cliches that are constantly thrown around, be it in simple conversation with your mechanic, or by full blown auto journos. Whether you are describing the lines of the car (a woman in a tight dress) or the feel of the gearbox (a rifle bolt), there always seems to be a perfect comparison waiting to be uttered.

My personal favorite, and the cliche that makes the largest claim, is that a vehicle is "a race car for the road". There are many companies that make what they believe fits the bill.

Which would you take home if money was no object?

I would build something unique. It would be racey yes. No a lot of creature comforts to keep the weight down. But I would build an analog car you couldn't buy.

Money no object?

First thing's first, I'd go on a months-long test-drive spree, and drive pretty much every sports car and super car that costs more than $100k.

Honestly, I regret test-driving less cars before buying my current ride last year. Very happy with my choice, but should have taken the opportunity to sample more of the automotive landscape.

Definitely a Caterham for me. The Mono is pretty damn cool, but the single seat configuration makes it a no go for me, as it would mean there would be no taking it for fun runs on twisty backroads with my fiance, nor could I get instructor ride-alongs to help me improve my lap times. The Caterham for me is the coolest out of the track day cars. It's damn quick since it weighs very little, and depending on which engine you have in it, that can quickly escalate to mindbendingly fast. It's relatively simple and doesn't take an engineering degree to work on, especially since most of the engine options are fairly common powerplants so parts are easy to find when you inevitably break something. Then there is it's classic shape, it's been around since the 50's, it's iconic, and even folks who don't know cars turn to look at it and smile when you drive past. Sure it's a little goofy looking, but for me that's part of it's charm.

If I assume we're talking about the very niche market of track day cars I'd find whatever one had a domestic race series i could enter into and buy that one.

I'll take a McLaren F1 in full race livery thank you

Kinja'd!!!

If not in full race livery I at least want the car in white with the BMW Motorsport checkered flag racing stripe from the race car.

There's an Atom Cup and probably a dozen Caterham Seven series, and almost definitely at least one for Radicals.

The 911 GT3 RS 4.0—de-striped, in red. It's the swan song for the 997, and still a six-speed to boot. And it's soooooooooo prettyyyyyyy. Need!
