Would F1 cars look more awesome if the FIA deemed that they can't have any bodywork above the engine?

Look more awesome: absolutely.
More importantly, I wonder if the aerodynamics would promote drafting (and thus passing).
More practically, what happens when an engine grenades from a safety standpoint?

Not really, because they don't use velocity stacks anymore. I am down for those simple wings however.

LOL, exactly. Then other constructors will fight over what is and isn't actually part of the engine.

I'm more wondering if a modern F1 engine might still throw parts in the event of failure. If so that would trump any reduction of engine fire damage.

Easy, they just regulate the height of engines like they do now.
