They make them even smaller too! The Metro had 12-13's, and the original Mini Cooper had 10-inch rims! My first car had 13's; tires were only $30 each.
New small cars should have 13-14's standard, maybe 12's for "city cars" the smart and Spark. There's no reason to have low-profile 16's on a basic subcompact (of course I'll make exceptions for the Fiesta ST and Sonic RS which are performance-oriented). Tires would be cheaper, and you'd get better gas mileage too.

I agree, but oddly enough, we care more about how our car looks then the gas mileage and enviromental factors. If tires were smaller, we wouldn't use as much rubber.
This Chrysler 300 has 20s!
