Saw this a few months ago but forgot to post it. I'm pretty confident that it's a 2jz swapped FD, but I am not 100 percent sure. It did have a Toyota oil cap though.

Kinja'd!!!

Here is another angle, and honestly to car looks amazing to me. Also, if you can't see it in the picture the owner had the carbon fiber hood cut to fit the engine, with rough edges and all exposed.

Maybe it's because I've lusted after an LS-(whatever) FD swap (and it's benefits) for so long, but I'm not feeling this.

Am I wrong?

Jesus that turbo is huge. It could be a 1JZ, there's not enough detail for my untrained eye to tell them apart in this photo.

On a side note, doing a quick google search for identifying markers between a 2jz and 1jz makes me very depressed. No one seems to know anything beyond "2.5 vs 3.0 liters" and even that gets contested by idiots who think that it's just the same engine with a different name. We all seem to agree that the 2JZ is bro-tastically better at everything though.

Then again, looking up "R32 vs R33 vs R34 skyline differences" is just as terrible.

I like an well put together engine swap, and hopefully in the future we'll get some coyote swaps.

Obligatory, but haven't the time to do a proper 'shop.

Yeah, when I searched all I could find was that the 1jz was 2.5, and the 2jz was 3.0. Also I my jaw dropped when I saw the turbo up close from how large it was, but the only turbos I have seen are VW's 1.8t, and a Volvo T5.

There are a lot of mechanical differences between the two, but not much is easily identifiable from the outside, especially since the exterior of the engine was changed around so much from all the different models, and this one is obviously not stock.

That turbo looks way bigger than anything I've seen stock on a car, and probably good for 20-25psi without a problem. If the rest of the car/engine can handle it, that can be a 500HP RX-7. The lag though... the lag is probably abysmal.

I assume you would have kept the rotary engine in it if it was up to you?

You make it sound like it's a bad thing.

I'll go with my usual argument: There are millions (if not billions) of piston engine-powered cars and only a few (by comparison) rotary-powered ones. If you want a car with a piston engine then go buy literally any other car than an RX-7.

I agree.

Why discard automotive uniqueness.

A Toyota JZ swap is more interesting than an SBC swap, but obviously doesn't fit under the low nose.

If you want a JZ... why not just buy a Supra? If you want a powerful FD-3S RX7, what is so wrong with a 20B-turbo swap? Just like if someone really wanted an SBC... get a Corvette...

Hell, it could be a 1.5JZ (1JZ head on a 2JZ bottom end). Like you said, the 1 & 2JZs are too close in appearance to figure out from a picture from this angle/distance.

Wasn't my intention to make it sound lie it's bad to want to keep the rotary engine in it, I was just curious. Also, you're right about there being so few rotary-powered cars when compared to a piston car that if one wanted to change an RX-7/8 to an LS/2jz/RB26/any other engine that they should consider another car, but when it is done correctly I find it to be a beautiful sight.

Oh, sorry, I get a bit too aggressive when it comes to engine-swapped RX-7s.

I love a well-done engine swap, but I'm rather adamant about keeping it "in the family".

I used to have that as my wallpaper, and IIRC it has a single turbo 13B, so it's alright!

Maybe the owner didn't want to deal with rebuilding the motor every 50k miles? Or maybe the owner wanted to get more than 12 miles to the gallon...?

Again...

so why not buy a different car?

There are other 2-seat coupe options, with alternate engines.

In the case of SA22s and FC3Ss, you make a very valid point. But both the looks and the handling of the FD3S are other-worldly. And, thanks to the 13B-TT's lack of reliability, a blown motor donor chassis can be had for not a whole lot of money.
