For those of us wondering about USCR for next year, this weekend should be enlightening. Grand-Am and the ALMS are racing at the same track this weekend, which means that us bench racers get to compare them. (spoilers ahead)
So far the Grand-Am contingent have had qualifying, and the fastest DP was the #42 Team Sahlen BMW/Riley at 2:00.028. In the Grand-am GT class (GTD in USCR) the fastest time was 2:11.183 (111.088 mph) in the #63 Ferrari 458. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
In the ALMS side, qualifying just happened. The GTC pole time was 2:11.931 in the #45 Flying Lizard, so relatively close to the GTD time. In GTE (GTLM in #thefuture) the pole time was 2:03.410 by the #93 viper (.8 s clear of everyone else). LMPC saw the #05 of Core Autosport go fastest at 1:57.630. The #552 HPD ARX-03b of Level 5 Motorsports took the pole in 1:54.806. Fastest overall was (of course) the #6 of Muscle Milk Pickett Racing at 1:51.460.
Maybe the track is amplifying the differences (high speed corners, long straights) but I find the differences in lap time shocking. I always thought that Daytona Prototypes were closer to GT cars, but from qualifying alone, they actually look easier to balance with GTLM. This really shows how hard the USCR management will have it balancing all of the classes.
