The speedometer, and the odometer on my '97 850R finally quit on me today. About a month ago I noticed they had stopped working after I had been sitting in traffic for 20 minutes, so I turned the car off and back on again and the problem was fixed. However, since that initial failure it's been getting worse and worse, and today it just stopped working all together.

My question is, are there any quick fixes for this? I saw somewhere that it might be the gears for the odometer that stopped working, but I'm curious if there's any other possible reasons for them to fail. Any recommendations, or help is appreciated.

I don't know how to fix that, but the good news is that you can still get the real mileage of the car as there is a second odometer in the computer.

So if you get a new odo, you can at least get the correct mileage.

As for the speedometer, just use a GPS :p

Assuming that it isn't the computer. A 1997 850 may have a bad ABS module, that's what happened to a friend's '98 S70 T5. Aside from losing ABS functionality the odometer & speedometer stopped reading, it's caused by bad solder joints failing and the only option is to resolder or replace it. Frankly it's either that or the plastic gear like you initially suspected. Pretty common issues either way, try the gear replacement first since it is so cheap and easy to take care of. Replacement units are on ipdusa.com

Check out IPDUSA.com They have a repair kit. I never had a problem with this on my old '855, but this is a common problem. There are gears in the gauge cluster at least for the speedo. The gears are plastic, get brittle over time, and eventually just break. The parts are cheap, but it is time consuming because you have to pull the gauge cluster out to replace them.

Maybe someone on here can chime in better than me, or you can also search turbobricks.com for some threads about it.

Oh, and on my 945, the speedo and odometer are somehow linked together. So, when one doesn't work neither does the other. I'm guessing this holds true on your car too.
