Kinja'd!!!

So I was out with the family, went fishing at a river nearby my house and my daughter says "CAR!".

My daughter is two, so my first instinct is to just agree with her and be on my way. "Caaaarrrr!" she says again. So I look. There it is. An old, rusty shipping container turned into an office with none other than the car my daughter spotted (from about 100 yards away might I add) sitting on top of it.

I've never been a huge fan of the VW Beetle, old or new or turbo. But there is something about a Baja Bug that just makes the kid in all of us get giddy and excited. I'm not sure why but my god they just look fun. I don't know all the specs but I'm sure it can't weigh anymore than my Aveo at 2,000 pounds so you stick a motor pushing out anything between 100 and 150 horsepower and you've got yourself something that anyone can have a good day in regardless of the weather. Just ask Raphael!

As you can see with the above picture, there is no engine. This doesn't bother me one bit. And whoever finds the owner and gives an offer on this shouldn't either. Why? Because that means you have the freedom to choose what you want to power this thing! You can create a monster if you want. You can make it slow and give it to your child as a first car. It's like a blank canvas. It can be whatever you want and no one can tell you what it should be!

Seeing an empty engine bay leads me to believe that there is most likely no transmission in it either. This should be taken the same way as the engine. You have full power to put whatever you want (or your budget allows) into it to make it go.

Kinja'd!!!

As you can see from the front, it would need some body work but other than that, it doesn't look to bad. At least to me. The tires don't even look so bad either. Put some air in them, plug any holes, hoon. At least that's how I view this. It probably needs some work in other places, but as a car that's probably sat a few years, in the sun, rain and snow of Anchorage, Alaska, it looks like it's in pretty good shape. So any of you Jalaop's up here in the great north want a Baja Bug, here you go! Have at it and just make sure to let me take it for a spin someday!

I loaned my best buddy some money to buy a '57 Beetle years and years and years ago. While waiting for him to pay me back, I drove it a few times.

I think it had 36 HP. No gas gauge, no heater (that worked), a shifter that was totally different from anything I was used to, and could not get out of its own way.

But it was fun.

Right? If I had the money, I would definitely throw a few hundred at the owner for it. It'd be a fun little project car.

Nice find! I was just down there a couple days ago, but didn't spot that. . .
I don't think its probably been sitting THAT long, as it's got 50th anniversary plates on it which have only been around for a few years.
The wheels are sweet, and the body doesn't look all that bad. Plenty of subys up here that could donate an engine for cheap, and you could have an awesome little hoon-mobile.

Have you tried to locate the owner?

First of all, you are the first person from Alaska (much less, Anchorage) that I've met on here! Other than that, no, I haven't tried to locate the owner. I assume that whoever owns the business right next to it probably owns it. It's down by Ship Creek between Downtown and the Government Hill gate at the base.

Those wheels are excellent. Worth it for those alone.

Yeah, there are a few ANC folks around here, just don't usually say much, haha.

Now that you know it is there it might be worth checking on it every few months to see if it moves - if not, could be worth doing some owner research for an upcoming winter project!

Cool find.

Come to Alaska and their yours! All you have to do is find the owner and throw down an offer. Worst he can say is "No" right?
