Political ignorance at its best! Of all the replies I got I think just ONE person got my point.

My point? It would be nice if Japan had more military strength to be seen as a more serious threat to North Korea so they could try to pick on someone their own size instead of making threats at us all the time.

Well, by launching an aircraft carrier Japan is most likely trying to balance China's dominance in the "South China Sea" that both state's claim. North Korea is pretty well balanced in the East Asia region by the Gang of Six which includes Russia to the north, China to the southwest, Japan to the southeast, and S. Korea. Also, U.S. military operations in that region are an effective deterrent to stop squabbles between Japan and China (the two biggest military actors in the region), so chances are as long as we remain a dominant presence there, N. Korea will not be more than the occasional nuisance.

Eh? Since when has Japan threatened the US 'all the time'?

I don't think I ever suggested they threatened the US all the time. I would suggest they're not a threat to us at all right now and it has nothing to do with their military strength. If you're reading some comments and someone suggested they are a threat to us then I'm as confused as you.

I didn't spend four years getting a degree in Political Science and Foreign Policy for nothing.

I didn't spend four years getting a degree in Political Science and Foreign Policy for nothing. I obviously got it to leave mildly more correct blog comments.

Should be a prerequisite for the people actually running foreign policy here.

Sorry, I was just being silly and picking at your grammar by pretending I thought 'they' in your sentence referred to Japan instead of NK. Well, it does, but I still knew what you meant.

Japan needs a Gerald Ford class carrier.

That might cause the Sourh China Sea to collectively crap their pants.

Maybe we could sell them one of our older aircraft carriers and some F22s and pay down some of our national debt. The loss of 1 carrier shouldn't cripple us.

Old carriers yes, F22s might be a sticking point since it was a USAF exclusive plane with no other country so much as allowed to lick its nose cone much less write a check for one.

Once we have the F35s figured out I don't know that we'll care much about some F22s though I read somewhere that we were letting Japan have some F35s.

The F22 is more air superiority, a role the F35 mechanically just can't do. Plus the F35 was developed under the JSF program so any country in it is allowed to buy them. The F22 was made under the secrecy of 30,000k hammers and toilets.
