Has anyone tried plasti dipping their wheels?

Thinking about plasti dipping my wheels, but in my very brief internet research, I haven't seen the enviable downsides.

My big questions: It is pretty easy to make it look good? Does it come off easy? Does the plasti dip do any damage to the wheels? Is there advice you with give to someone trying it for the first time?

Thanks oppo

We did this on the LeMons race car. Worked fine for our purposes :)

Take your rims off and then clean them and then spray the dip. 4-5 coats, makes removal that much easier.

Mine held up through a Canadian winter.

Had gunmetal rims on my old evo. Loved em.

My fiancée has the same opinion as you. I like the way they look on the internet, but until I see a set in real life, I guess I'll sleep on the idea. Always gotta listen to my better half...

You might have missed that. I'm going to do that in a few days. If you want a first hand report, wait for it.

I have 2 friends who did their wheels 2 years ago. Has held up well through Northeast winters. Only advice, do a few coats, the thicker it is the easier it is to remove.

Fair warning ahead:

If you're going to track the car, the coating will likely not hold up because of the nasties that come off of your brakes, and if it does, will prevent you from examining the wheels for hairline cracks that will soon turn to failure.

I did mine, off the car, in white. They looked absolutely fantastic. I did many, many coats. At least 8. (I was having some trouble with the stuff. Got left in the garage over winter and had some separation)

The shape of my wheels made things a little tricky, what with the crevices and all, but it came out alright, in my eyes. dipyourcar.com and their youtube channel have a lot of information.

What color were you planning?

There's gunmetal plastidip...

It doesn't look any tackier than any other matte wheel coating. It's maybe, MAYBE not quite as smooth as paint or powdercoating, but not by much.

The clear coat on my stock wheels started cracking and since it was just cosmetic and didn't affect operation, it wasn't covered under warranty.

My advice is as follows:

Clean, Clean, Clean again, the wheels must be clean and dry!

Remove the wheels, don't try to do it while on the car.

Be patient, the first coat should be a 50% transparency and full coverage doesn't come until 3-4 coats.

Don't let the plasti-dip pool up, keep moving.

Distance is important, too close and its runny, too far and you get a rough texture.

It really is a great product and has held up well.

I sprayed my rims around October of last year. It held up great until I got my tires rotated last month and a tech thought he knew better than I when I warned him about the coating. Now I get to re-coat the whole set. I did a test spray on a spare rim before I committed to it, and it came off pretty easily with no damage (though it was a polished aluminum rim, so there wasn't much to damage). My suggestions would be to clean the rims extremely well, and to put on one extra coat once you think they look good. I put on 4-5 coats and they looked great until they finished drying. I could see some of the chrome underneath poking through in a couple spots. One more coat would have had it perfect.

I was thinking black. Got a new Escape and I'm not completely in love with the 19"s that came on it.

Looks like crap all ways.

Rather do a nice powder coat.
