So most of you may remember I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to replace the aging, stretched-beyond-hell chain on my 919. Well, digging into the box, out came a little plastic bag for the masterlink - though it was the type that you clip on.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Uhm, I don't know much about different chain types but I am a bit wary should the little clip suddenly fly off. Anyone have experience on such a thing and should I return it?

Are you talking about one like this?

I thought you had a Triumph.

Is it like this?

Yep!

Eh, used to. Biggest. Mistake. Ever.

Make sure you put it on correctly and have the right amount of tension in the chain and you'll be fine. I prefer the other type but these work.

You traded your Sprint?

I have used both types. If you've got the tool, I would recommend using the one that has to be "crushed" into place. If not, make sure you put the bottom of the "U" shaped clip toward the direction of rotation. If you're facing the bike and installing it on the upper part of the chain (above the swing arm), the bottom of the U should face left. If you're installing it on the lower part of the chain, the bottom of the U should face right.

Oh, no, different model.

You didn't own a Sprint? Which Triumph did you own then?

As MtRider posted, you put the clip going away from the direction of travel. Never had a problem with one coming unclipped. If your chain is "stretched beyond hell", you probably need new sprockets as well.

... Bonneville.

Well, it's right at the mark between red and green. The bike's sitting in the garage for now, thankfully.
A new sprocket set is coming down in the next few months, though.

Oh, neat. I'm probably confusing you with someone else from Oppo who owns a Sprint. (It's good to see so much Triumph love here)
Anyway, why is the 919 (we call it the Hornet in Eastatlanticland) so much worse than your Bonnie? Just curious.

As much as I like the 919, I still prefer the Bonnie for it's go-anywhere linear power-delivery.
I don't hate the 919, though.

Look the teeth over good. If there is not symmetry on each side of the teeth, you need new sprockets. They wear on the thrust face of the sprocket.

... By any chance, you wouldn't happen to have a diagram?

This would be at advanced wear but you can get the idea.

then make sure you clip it further! the pic above is only partly installed - IT WILL FALL OFF, chain will snag, #twowheelsbad will happen
ride safe! rubber side down!
