This is a Subaru Sambar, and someone actually has one for sale. Jalopnik did a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on one about a year ago, and now by the gods there exists one in America. Specifically one in PA.

How it got here I have absolutely no idea, but I found it on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! today. The wheels look pretty horrible, as does the rear wheel cover... But as a whole it looks pretty righteous. It has AWD and comes with tint that I'm sure isn't legal - although that doesn't matter because according to the ad, this vehicle is "NOT FOR ROAD USE" (the seller's caps lock button is stuck).

For an asking price of $7,500, this thing screams crack pipe. For the sheer rarity of it, this would be an awesome vehicle to own, aside from the fact that you could never actually drive it. The seller suggests it's for taking on trails, but that seems a little bit ridiculous for a car with tiny little wheels and low ground clearance.

It would make a decent farm truck for moving around light cargo.

not entirely crack pipe, these things get used for ground maintenance at things like golf courses and the like. Also used in some areas of the country as farm vehicles. they're out there...

Counterpoint: I'd rather have a Mazda Porter Cab, and anyd of the ones with the right look are old enough to import.

You can drive those legally on the road here in. They're simply registered as ATVs, which are also legal to drive on the road, so long as they have working front and rear light.

I guess that's one of the few benefits of living in a flyover state. Sorta.

I should also mention, I ran across an importer's website the other day specializing entirely in importation of kei trucks for groundskeeping and other duty, so such things exist.

There's also this, though I think the 25 year exemption probably applies to them as to other road use vehicles.

In connection with the 'inappropriate car' segment, I say RALLY IT!

First-generation Porter Cabs (with round headlights) are much rarer than second-generation Porter Cabs (with square headlights connected by a black bar).

I've noticed that late first gen seems to be the sweet spot. Square-ish headlight dishes, but still the "surprised face" sans bar, and much cheaper than the ones pictured.
