Not the car we deserve, but maybe the car we want.

But seriously, both videos are broken.

That minivan review made me chuckle, although I have to admit I didn't make it past the first two minutes. The horrible presenter and the supposed stylish shots of the boring toaster made it seem like a high school project video.

The Avensis is an also-ran. There are so many better competitors out there. It's a car, let's leave it at that.

Not a minivan, that's 7 seats SUV, the Sienna is a minivan.

And the Avensis is a diesel, manual, wagon. What's an also ran for you, is a car that's pretty damn Jalop for us.

Tomayto, tomahto. It's a 3-row FWD tall-ish family vehicle, and thus a minivan to me. With a big grill, I'll give it that.

Sure, but remember the grass is always greener on the other side. What's mundane in the US can be pretty damn special here as well.

When it comes to the Avensis there's a boatload of cars I'd rather have. All wagons of a similar size, with optional diesel engine and manual transmission. Mazda 6, Peugeot 508, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Skoda Superb, Citroën C5, Hyundai i40, Honda Accord, Volvo V60 and possibly even the VW Passat and Subaru Legacy.

But it's possible my bias is showing.

It's certainly a diesel, manual wagon. It's just not as good as all of these comparably priced diesel, manual wagons:

And that's not even the whole list.

The Avensis is a decent car; its competitors are good to great.

The Skoda and the VW look boring, and the Kia and Ford look smaller.

Let me give you an extra hand :)
None as boring as the Toyota, all of a similar size.

The Skoda and the VW look boring, but the Toyota doesn't? They're both better to drive, for one thing.

Anyway, the Kia can hold 528 litres with the seats in place, and 1,642 with them down. Similarly, the Avensis has space for 543 litres with the seats up, and 1,609 with them down. So, comparable.

The Ford doesn't manage quite the same capacity - 476 litres with the seats in place, 1,502 without - but makes up for it in other areas. It is, for example, easily the most fun to drive of the three.

And then you've got the rest of the competition:

Pretty much all of which have reviewed far better, among both the general public and journalists.

The Toyota isn't a terrible car by any means, but unless you're a big fan of the brand generally, there's very little to recommend it over the competition.

(I'd get the Mazda, myself.)
