In what twisted world is genero-hair-rock Whitesnake considered superior to genero-modern pop? They're both steaming turds, folks, and that's not opinion.

If you really wanted us to breakout the flame-resistant suits your should have name dropped some of the latter group.

Well, it is an opinion. Specifically, it's a correc t opinion. I was in my 20s in the 80s, but hair bands hold no nostalgia for me, and it's only nostalgia that makes people listen to that stuff now.

There were so many choices, I didn't even know where to begin. But I also wanted to keep the focus on the fact that, as someone who enjoys older music, Whitesnake fucking sucks and is listening to them is not indicative of having taste, regardless of what your contemporaries are listening to; your friends could be listening to Donny fucking Osmond and it still wouldn't make you superior to listen to Whitesnake instead.
But yes, much room for flameage was left on the table here, unfortunately.

Yes.

Welcome to the post-irony era. Some hipsters listened to Whitesnake because it was "lame" and they though they were being clever. Then some other guys came along and saw these "cool guys" who seemed "up on things" listening to it and decided it was literally cool. Next a third guy without the original context just sees a peer listening to it and decides it's A-OK. Somehow it has become legitimately cool to a specific subset.

While they may have the same quality, it's really two different genres and shouldn't be compared in the first place.
Also the difference between bluesrock Whitesnake and hair-metal Whitesnake is huge.

I don't see it that way. Hipsters are capable of some stupid shit, but even hair bands are beyond them.
How I see it happening is that a lot of millenials, myself included, grew up on a parent's music collection, specifically that of classic rock. And a lot of those kids decided early on that they didn't like modern music and that classic rock was the be-all end-all. And for some of those kids, their parent's music collection included hair bands. And those kids will be forever ruined by the notion that hair bands are good music, good classic rock, or good anything.

Hahaha. First I put nothing past hipsters since I saw one driving an old Chrysler K-car like it was the coolest thing in the world.
Second. You also have a decent alternate theory. Can't expect people to sort the wheat from the chaff if they're raiding their parents' music collection.

HEY MAN, I grew up in the 80's and actually LIKED Whitesnake.
When my mom needed a few cassettes to round out her BMG Music Group monthly selection, she let me get a tape or two. Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, U2, David Lee Roth's solo album (Eat Em and Smile? - checks google - YUP), etc.

Oh dear god, the K-Car hipster? He's not just a joke we've all been making?!

Wait how long has this joke been around? If I ever reference it I was talking about an actual guy I spotted. Emo hair, scraggly beard, Mr Rogers sweater, birth control glasses, boat shoes, floodwater tight pants.
If I ever catch him at the fuel stop again I will have to whip out the potato. I never realized it was like spotting bigfoot.

You must potato that fucking hipster. I've used and have seen the joke about hipsters and k-cars made on here for a while now, it pops up from time to time. This is incredible news!

This is a good sign indeed. It means leaving old cars with redeeming qualities for those who appreciate them beyond a twisted fashion statement.

I lived through the hair metal era (and clearly remember dancing at HS dances to Whitesnake) and do not miss it at all. I will never embrace the comeback of this musical form.
Now grunge, grunge can come back anytime.
Oh, and there's a ton of awesome modern pop, check out Haim and Chvrches just to name two from this year.
