Porsche planning a special 911 safari [concept] with 4wd, lifted suspension A/S tires and skid plates

Kinja'd!!!

This seems like the perfect way to simultaneously piss off the purists and bring joy to the Jalops. They may even built it, thanks to the BRIC countries.

A company that rebadges VW family trucksters and sells them as a Porsche? Who cares? It's not like they're a "purist" sports-car company anyway.

Ah, I went looking for posts, but didn't find any. Are you excited about this or what?

OH FUCK YES! SO MUCH WANT!

Kinja'd!!!

I can't even describe how much I want a rally 911. My rally 911 fantasies typically revolve around those of a more vintage persuasion, but I can't wait to see what this one is like.

Totally. Hopefully, they don't screw it up by going "crossover" with it.

Those C&D commenters are idiots. Even though it's huge compared to it's predecessors , a rally 991 would be amazing. I wish WRC, FIA rallycross, and GRC would free up their rules so we could have 991s competing.

It is not like they didn't do it in the past, so I don't think purists will be pissed a lot. More likely snobs will be pissed that their cars wear the same badge and model, as with ones that can become dirty and not look glamorous and are driven by people who enjoy things, other then driving their cars to show off that they made it in life.

It's like taking the awesomeness that is the Ford Raptor, and multiplying it by about eleventy bajillion. I can't believe that they are actually considering making it!

You can never find enough ways to piss off a 911 purist.

Makes total sense if you think about it; its just a Porsche WRX STI, and its not like its hard to do or costly, but that doesn't mean you cant charge lots more for it.

Yes, but the actuall purists will know, that Porsche has done such things with 911s in the past. I think more mad will be the people that buy 911 just for the badge.

"I think more mad will be the people that buy 911 just for the badge." Right...the "Purists" I think real purists fall into the jalop category.

The 1978 Safari machine you posted is 2wd.
http://expeditionportal.com/latest-news/23…

The first 911 to have 4wd was the 1981 prototype that still exists to this day.

I don't get what's to be pissed off about. Even for the individuals who see rear engined, air cooled, and 2 wheel drive as the only way, a competition department special is nothing to be upset with.

In the French rally championship which is a tarmac based series, Gilles Nantet was 2011 champion in a Porsche 996 GT3 Cup. He's since switched to the 997 and it is remarkable he was able to take the title when you consider he is facing 4wd S2000 based competition.

In the same way the 1972 2.7 Carrera RS could be run as a rally car, there is no reason Porsche cannot exploit FIA R-GT rally regulations with a 911 based product in the same manner as Lotus' Exige. The R-GT is a category that deserves more participation as it specifically exists to allow non standard entrants.

The reason i make the point is your comment comes off as if the 911 has never had a rally history. Off top of my head, they won the 1970 IMC (Pre WRC), 4x Monte Carlo Rally, 2x Dakar Rally and many others.

oh I know they have history with Rally, so does Rolls Royce, but you know it would put RR owners up in arms to hear about a rally version...as not being "traditional" in the same way the 911 purists will get all bent out of shape about Porsche "loosing its way" despite the obvious history.

I don't think most 911 driving purists would think that. I would be up in arms about a luxury version of the 911 much like what the 930 Turbo turned into.

About Rolls Royce rally cars. Which era are you referring to? The city to city races of the 1890's and early 1900's or in the mid 19oo's?
