As a 'murican, and being in permanent possession of a penis, I need that V8. I know the 2v is the lamest of all V8s, but it's also the cheapest right now.

A V8 is like pizza. Even the bad ones are still pretty good.

Maybe go for a new edge pre-terminator Cobra?
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:46 |

You must own a Mustang or at least respect them, they are as American as apple pie
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:50 |

Too rich for my blood. I really want a shoebox Mach 1, but they run about the same as the cobras :(

I could always do the 4v swap. Some people have done it, though it's not at all super straight forward.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:51 |

Why Mustang? And why that gen? You already mentioned it's cheap and lame. Save yer money lad
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:51 |

I suppose you never heard of the Lexus SC 430.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:55 |

Why not? I've already been without transportation long enough. It's time.
I've lived with F-bodies before, time to see what's happening on the other side of the fence.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 10:57 |

Having read that, the only rustang I'd hop the fence for is a Terminator. Or maybe an LSX swapped Fox. I'm afraid I've used up all my usefulness in this thread.

I suppose an engine swap in a car like that could be pretty fun to boot. One of the reasons why I haven't completely discarded the option of buying a Nova in Argentina, if I had the money, of course, is the possibility of hopping up the stock 250 6 cylinder and then swap it for a small block V8 in the longish run.

The Mach 1's are pretty awesome, basically a Cobra minus the IRS if I remember right. I have a roommate in college who owns a supercharged V6 new edge with a lot of Maximum Motorsports suspension parts but he says he would rather start over with a S197 GT than modify his Frankenstein V6. Also, the new edge interior is quite...meh, it feels really cheap with all that dull plastic.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:09 |

Well you get some cool guy points for not trolling the thread then LOL. It's not this whay everywhere, but where I live LS1s are rare, LT1s are rarer, an non-ragged out samples come with a considerable premium. 80-100k mile LT1 = $8k(!). Not much competition even within a 100 mile radius. $5k is the floor for any V8 F body regardless of what's under the hood, and these are super high-mile examples that are about to die.
I'm also considering a 5.3 truck block swapped into a third gen, but that's a year of work and maybe more in parts than just buying a complete car.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:11 |
|
Yup, if I remember correctly, the engine was too heavy, too complicated, too unreliable and didn't put out much power when compared to the simpler, lighter, all around awesomer LT of the era.
I guess american V8s are like Pizza then, even the bad ones are still good. Not good good, but good in a bad way, haha...
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:14 |

Shit interiors were a hallmark of that era of pony car. It's also not the best ergonomically for three pedalers, but I don't care. I just need to own at least one mustang before I'm ready to go full oppo into the cemetary.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:14 |

That had to be one of the worst V8 powered cars ever, lol.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:15 |

It's also the best V8 you can buy on a delicious sounds per dollar spent basis

The V8 is worth it. Do it.

87-93 Fox + Turbo LSx + Lenco + 8.8" and 31 Spline axles with some Mini-tubs to fit up to 29x10.5 tire and you've got a lot of car for fairly little invested.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:34 |

Where do you live? I've read many a good build threads on junkyard truck blocks being swapped into rollers/3rd gens/etc. I'm trying to sell my ragged LT1 :(
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:37 |

I thought Lenco trans were fairly expensive? I'm down for the T56. Unless this was all DIY, I could see the wallet being hurt.

WHY did you say that? …. when the 400 is so much better (imo)
![]() 12/26/2013 at 11:58 |

Some of them can be, and if you kit them out.. they all are. But this one, with 3-4 units and a reverser would be fairly reasonable:

At least compared to the H-pattern I bought earlier this year for the 1G.

The SC430 has a terrible V8. I don't even know what the 400 came with.

I don't know anything about them so I'll take your word on it :)
I thought DSM guys love the shep box? Post pics if you got em, my friends are DSM freaks. One has a Galant VR-4 and they have both owned Talons

On 3 Performance makes a nice, affordable turbo kit. 500 hp with a turn of a knob for under $5k? Yes, please! Then Griggs has the suspension to put it all down to the ground for a couple grand...
![]() 12/26/2013 at 12:10 |

Ahh now I get why, but just for clarity … 4L, 250hp, 4 cam, 32 valve in 1992, and they upped it to 260hp, then 290hp by 1997. 1UZ's are pretty well liked engines.

you are forgetting a fundamental law...fox bodies go fast! you can be in a fox body that would toast a terminator for about half the cost if you built it yourself
![]() 12/26/2013 at 12:48 |

My 2v V8 isn't lame... but the difference is mine isn't a Ford...
But to be fair, those Mustangs still do sound quite good. And if you can find one for a good enough deal, there will be someone out there to buy it from you when you've saved up enough to upgrade...
![]() 12/26/2013 at 12:51 |

C'mon man, you know the '2v' doesn't refer to every 2v V8 out there, lol.

Haha, I know. Just have to rib people about Mustangs when I can. ;) But if you like it, and you find a nice one, I'm not gonna talk you out of it. We do need more V8 people in this world... even if that means some of them will drive shudder ...Mustangs...
![]() 12/26/2013 at 12:58 |

Foxbodies are kind of pricey for such an old car. Good ones cost more than Cobras, SVT Termis and 3v Retrostangs do. No joke. The okay-to-shitty ones are going for a significant premium over the 2v. Also 3/4s of them in my area are verts and I don't really care for those (effin florida...)
![]() 12/26/2013 at 13:16 |

The pi heads are pretty decent just throw a off road mid pipe, a cai, and rebuild the diff with 3.73's and you will be very happy
![]() 12/26/2013 at 13:21 |

foxbodies arent pricey.
regardless of what you say to be true, the populace will find and exploit the cheapest way to go fast. what is the by far most common seen car at drag strips? (Hint: its not a fourth gen)

My last mustang (I've owned many) was an 02 GT. I had previously owned an 04 cobra so my expectations for the car were pretty low. I made some minor upgrades to the motor, including intake, exhaust(Bassani with the x-pipe catted) and an SCT tuner. The rest of my money went to maximum motorsports. I bought the road and track grip box and with the help of a friend, installed it myself. I later scored a set of used brembo's for the front. Some other minor crap I installed included 3.73 rear gears, a steeda tri-ax shifter, clutch cable adjuster (fire wall and quadrant), and some grippy pedals.
Overall, I had a ton of fun with that car. I autocrossed it a few times and was mildly impressed with how well it did. It was a great car and I was actually sad when I sold it to an 18 year old kid who hounded me for 6 months before I gave in. He's since super charged it and swapped out the catted x-pipe for an open one. It's obnoxiously loud, but damn does it sound good. Regardless of what people say about their obvious short comings, they're great platforms to tinker with and return your investment with smile inducing sound and tire smoke.

That's got more to do with lightness than price. And a shop has options I kind-of don't, like getting a roller for dirt cheap and building it up. None of these cars are 'pricey' if you don't think sub-$5k cars are expensive, but in my area (200mi radius), if you want a foxbody, crappy ones come with a premium over 2vs, and good condition ones are slightly more expensive than LS1s, culling back 3/4ths of them for being verts on top of all of that.

V6 camrys today are almost as fast, but I'd rather be growling through true duals than grounded to the ground any day of the week.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 13:30 |

+1 on that! The aftermarket is there for every mustang if you're not happy with what you got. So many damn parts, so many ways to go fast.
![]() 12/26/2013 at 13:39 |

It's a hard value to beat. I've finally started to miss mine 9 months after selling it. They're stupidly simple to work on, too.
And, they make surprisingly competent cars on track with a little bit of investment. Sorting out the front end is just a matter of lowering, camber caster plates, new ball joints and a bumpsteer kit. The rear-end is a little more involved, but not difficult or overwhelmingly expensive.
Or you can just throw $1000 at various parts and have a shitload of fun for not very much money, track-day competence be damned. Powerslides are powerslides, right?
![]() 12/26/2013 at 13:39 |

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't know when I say, going fast can mean many different things. Straight line, twisties, whatever. It's all about what gives you satisfaction.
Have fun with whatever you get and remember there are soooo many resources available for the edge platform. I will warn you though, unless money is no object, pick a final destination to build towards instead of winging it as you go. I ended up wasting a ton of money on an 89 LX fox body that started as a drag car and ended up being a daily driver...

Did you think I was praising the SC430? Lol@that!

lol k man. if you want to buy it thats cool there's no reason to make stuff up to justify it

I do like it, but unless you spring for a Dogbox with a PPG gearset (~9-10k) you are still using a lot of OEM hardware. The Lenco is just basically "stackable" planetary gearboxes. They can handle a lot of abuse, you can adjust how hard each shift bites, etc.
Really a nice piece of hardware for someone who wants a serious street/strip RWD toy without going Auto.
Here's some pics:

Yea I don't know what I was thinking. Just saying not all SC's are bad.

1st result: Vert, Cheap because it needs fixing
2nd Result: Vert, Shaddy dealer utterly lying about the mileage (1 mile, lol), and even given that, this is already 2x the cost of the cheapest 2v within 200 miles of me (which is also a vert, but still.)
3rd result: Another Vert, a bazillion miles on it, and we've already broken 5k. Want a coupe? That's still $3k away. More results = More $$$
Okay, How about good condition then? To me, Good condition = ~50k miles, give or take 10k. Want that in a fox body within a 200 mile radius of me? $ 13k. Thirteen motherfucking k. This is slightly more than double the price over a similar condition 2v . This is $2k more than a new edge Mach 1 with 30k fewer miles on it!
Look dude. I don't know how things work in your used auto market, but this is how they work in mine. The fox has achieved legendary status as a cheap-to-build track car over the years. The new edge 2v hasn't. This means one of these cars will get to have slightly more inflated prices over the other. Is the foxbody cheap? Relative to what a new car costs to build, sure. Relative to other rollers, sure. Relative to other cheap mustangs? Not so much. That's not my opinion talking. That a fact borne out of local market research.
