From the holiday anecdote grapevine..
Niece went to have her oil changed. A period of time later, concludes her business and sets out on the road..
You can guess what they neglected to do.
Now the fun game: Guess the drivetime!
I think it was a Honda engine.
10 minutes
15 minutes
45 minutes
1 Hour
90 minutes
The tow driver was very understanding, they went directly back to (let's just assume the big oil-change 'professionals') and basically, niece will be getting a new motor. Currently driving a tiny tiny rental.
It must be a dynamic where they just expect foulups, have the engine replacement hotline on standby. Not sure how they proved the case, perhaps the oil drain plug was still in place.
Lesson: If for some reason you can't get the oil changed yourself, for goodness sake check the levels before leaving the lot. That applies to everywhere.

I had a '97 civic with the D14A4 engine. That thing ran without a dipstick for almost 90 minutes... So I'll guess 90 minutes.

Sorry, the illustration may have been a bit deceiving. It wasn't the dipstick, it was the oil.
Lower.

Thanks for playing, the answer was: It took one hour for symptoms of a motor lacking oil to become obvious enough for an untrained driver to notice.
