If you rally a 4-door saloon like one of those, what's inside the rear door?
If it's empty, why don't make it two doors and save some weight?

Yes, Like that.
I think it's mitsu's problem..

When the heck did they make that?!? Is that a 2?

It's a coupé Lancer, yes.

Okay, that's a fail, it's not an Evo, it's a lame Lancer with a ridiculous front bumper.... That's no rally car.

My point is that there was an opportunity to build a 2-door Lancer Evo.

True... So much potential.
I always wonder if Subaru would've kept building WRX coupes if they'd been smart enough to bring the car here before they canned the coupe. Funny thing is if they had I bet it would've sold like hot cakes to NASIOC members and Mitsu would've built the damn thing... Instead we had to wait for the freaking bug eye.
For the record, however, THIS is the most badass Evo!
Because Wagon!

Another structure integrity column, stress braces and stiffness.

We actually progressed from rallying an Impreza coupe to an Impreza sedan (not by design, that's just how it worked out) and those two extra doors are actually great to have. It gives us a place to put the helmets on long transits (previously I'd have both the driver's and my helmet in my lap), it gives us a quick and easily accessible place to have the tool bag, and it provides us with a place to mount things like the cool suit unit where it's out of the way but still easily accessible. I love having four doors.
Added note in regards to other rally cars: I've seen the back door space used for shovel storage at winter rallies, tow rope storage, and the mounting location for a satellite tracking unit, among other things.

I see..
I once do some amateur rallying using my 4-door kia, but i left the car 4-door because i'm too lazy to make it a coupe. And i'm almost never used the rear space..
