So this is the very early stages here, but I am looking for some ideas. Once the garage is cleared out and I get rid of the money pits currently occupying the space (think 4-6 months from now) I will be looking for a new cheap car to have fun in.
The only vehicle in my stable I will be keeping is the Jeep. Everything else will either be sold or parted, and the replacement will not come until everything is gone. That being said, I like to have a game plan. What I want is something to fool around with, not to costly, and mostly reliable. It does not need to be fast (anything will feel fast compared to my Jeep) but it does need to be fun and have some form of readily available part support behind it. It will also end up getting some upgrades for auto-x and minor track days.
The only real requirement (mechanically) I have is that it is manual. other than that, it can be RWD, AWD, or even FWD (although I would prefer rear or all), and anywhere from 2 to 16 cylinders, N/A or forced.
Finally, I must be able to purchase this in decent running and driving condition for around $5,000. (I'd say +/- $1500 for the right car)
Currently on the thought list is (in no particular order) :
1: Porsche 914
2: Mazda Miata
3: Saab 9 3 Viggen coupe
4: E30 # series (Oversteer)
5: Subaru Impreza RS Coupe (Rotaryless Lover)
6: Lexus Sc300 (Rotaryless Lover)
7: Toyota Celica ST185 AllTrac (Rotaryless Lover)
8: Toyota MR2 SW20 (Rotaryless Lover)
9: Pontiac Fiero (Joest)
What would you add to my list for consideration.
Again, for cliff notes: Around $5,000, Manual, fun/sporty. GO

E30 325is? That's just me. Maybe because I've been on an e30 kick lately, and that e30 hillclimb video did not help.

Toyota Tercel is the answer.

I will propose what I drive
A 6 speed manual AWD suzuki SX4. 150 HP in a car that's the size of a versa/fit. Actually a very fun small car, even more fun in the snow. SX4's are basically overbuilt. only problem, is that there is not much performance parts on the market except for RRM.
I also own a 97 jeep tj, but that is to go in the bush.

A 1st gen DSM is actually one of the money pits currently in the garage.

Lol, there's a guy around here been trying to sell a 94 lightning for almost a year now. wants $4995 and the thing is beat to shit. It leaks, paint is faded, clear coat missing, just a mess. Cool trucks when maintained.

Well at least I would be able to get back in a shape other than round...

late C3/C4 'vette?
And if you hate your life, Rx-7.

Hey, round is a shape too!

I'd probably C3 over C4 unless ZR1, but chances of finding a running ZR1 for $5k ish. NOT.
And FC or FD (doesn't matter because apex seals)

Hmm... Scratch the chevette thought then. Most of that fun comes with snow and ice.

Thanks braw! Imma be flyin with that wing!
On a serious note, the Miata is really worth it and it's proven here in this community.
The Porsche and Saab will give you badass cool points...but I don't know how expensive parts are gonna be tho.
You could get a Rx7 FB 1984-85. A Subaru Impreza RS coupe. A third gen Supra, a Lexus SC400, ST162 Celica GT-Four, a SW20 or AW11 MR2, BMW e30 and so much more...

SC400 only came in Auto (IIRC) but the SC300 had a manual variant and that had the 2JZ non turbo in it!
Also, how could I forget about the ST162 / ST186 (although I would much rather an ST204)

Forgot about it for the SC400 hahaha. What do you think of aw11s?

damn dope heads
well with the ~$1500 that you save on this one (in theory), you could fix it up a bit.

Im more of an SW20 fan. the AW11 isn't bad, but if I could get an SW20 I would.
