EDIT: Kinja cropped my photo preview. Damnit.
So, I love my wife. She loves college football, hockey, and most recently go-karting. She has an interest in cars but doesn't know much about them. More than a "typical" wife, but she is still learning. She watches F1, IndyCar, and Aussie V8's with me. She is basically awesome.
Lately she has earned herself some more Jalop points. A local Chevy dealer has an 08 Land Rover LR2 that she pointed out a few weeks ago. I told her that they can be a maintenance nightmare. She has been internet stalking it ever since. I told her she gets gearhead points for wanting it, but it is probably a bad idea. Today she sends me a photo of it... "Look at that ass," she says. "How am I not supposed to think this is sexy?!" Have I mentioned how awesome my wife is?

That is a keeper right there. Have these bottomed out price-wise? If so, then why not take a chance. Sure, you may drop some dough on maintenance but you would be having fun.

I find it strangely attractive when a women has good taste in cars
Also, does she know how to drive stick? Major Jalop points for that one...

I didn't even have to teach her. She is a good one.

They are asking $15,600 for it with 70k on the odometer. It doesn't sound like a bad price. If anything goes wrong on it we would probably be in a bad spot.

I'm assuming the points are referring to Jalop points. . . If I am correct you have one damn awesome lady in your life.
Take a play out of DeMuro's book and find one at Carmax and get the warranty with it and then chalk up the "premium" to not having to deal with an awesomely capable machine that is plagued with potential malfunctions. . . Plus you get to make the wife happy and not deal with horrendous maintenance when the truck inevitably goes south in the reliability department. I can only think you'd profit with wifey points and fiscal management points, that is if you could feasibly find one in your budget with an excellent aftermarket warranty.

no.

Ask the dealer if they either have a warranty or sell you one... then you should buy it.... a happy wife means a happy life

As said, she's a keeper. Go for it, get the Landy. Have fun, if anything brakes etc... it'll be a good bonding experience to further build on Jalop points.
P.S. Does she have a sister, willing to live in the U.K. in beautiful Cumbria?

You are correct about the points.
I am pretty sure the dealership offers warranties for purchase. It would probably add 3-4k to the price for a decent but still fairly short term warranty. I'm ball-parking that from personal experience so it could be more or less. It would also be a much cooler wife-whip than the CRVs we have been looking at.

I wouldn't touch it with a 29 1/2 foot pole, but she definitely gets Jalopoints.

It might at least be worth a look. I have never driven one. Sadly, no sister. She has a brother though...

Ooow. No thanks. Cheers though. :(
Go for a look, if you like it then familiarise yourself with the vehicle by contacting a local Land Rover club and asking a few questions about what you should be looking for before going for a second look and may view to purchase. Also if there is a Landy event soon, pop round and experience the car culture you may be joining. They are a happy go lucky bunch and very knowledgeable people should you need them.

From what I remember new car extended warranties should be a max of $1500. Keep in mind the dealer is trying to sell you the warranty for as much as they can so they get more profit. Please don't take it as me painting the stealership picture, but know that the warranty price is generally negotiable and completely refundable for the unused portion of the coverage, so when you sell the truck you can cancel the warranty and get a prorated(? not sure if correct term) refund for the unused portion of the warranty. I don't know if Carmax works the same, but any other dealer offering a warranty you should be able to negotiate the warranty price down. Keep that in mind, as me personally would not own a Land Rover without a warranty.
Get her a Rover and earn even more jalop points by showing her how awesome you are out in the woods somewhere and no one else is around. Off-road adventure + no civilization + wife + spacious rear area = massive profit for you good sir.

Out of all the Land Rovers the LR2 has the least amount of issues, not saying much however it's something. Just make sure the service record is up to snuff.
Also the LR2 doesn't have low range so isn't as capable as the rest of the fleet (more capable than the evoq though)

Well she sounds like a keeper :)
My GF whips a purple Hyundai Sonata :(
but she is still wonderful because she puts of with my Jalopness and rants about things like electric power steering

Yeah, I used to sell so I know there is a lot of markup in a warranty. I would assume cost has gone up since then (about 3 years) so i was guesstimating. I would definitely want bumper to bumper coverage for as long as I could afford.
EDIT: Oh yeah spacious cargo area! I know what you're there for...

What state are you in?
Here's a list I quickly found on a Google search.
http://www.roverparts.com/clubs/
They'll all be more than happy to advise you on anything you want or need to know. Many used to look down on the Freelander when they first came out, but they rapidly grew a fan base and are seen as quite a capable vehicle and a great daily driver if you find a good one. Unfortunately some buy a Land Rover for a slightly prestigeous brand name and it's association with more affluent people and so don't understand the marque or maintain them the way they should. Thats where the club guys come in and help greatly.

That's awesome! Thanks so much for the effort. I'm in Pennsylvania.
I never really understood the prestigious side of buying a Land Rover. There are some pretty damn cool features available but personally I wouldn't associate them with money. These are approximately the same money as an RDX, so I guess you get a lot of people with a little bit of money who want you to think they have more. People are strange. On the up side, it would be nice to have a capable vehicle when need be and all the creature comforts and room for my wife and son. I will definitely look into the club you linked to. Thanks a lot.

No worries mate. I guess the thoughts on prestige come from it's a traditionally British company (I'm not going to get into an arguement with other Oppos that don't consider it British anymore because it's owned by an Indian company, Chrysler is no less American for having Italian owners) and Range Rover and virtually anybody with money has a Range Rover. Hilfiger has a fleet of Freelandies, Discos, Rangies, Series and D110s.
Just ask a few questions, kick a few tyres, even if you don't go for the Landie you've at least listening to your wife and went and had a look which gains you far more 'marriage points' than saying ”no love, it'll brake at some point so you should just forget about it”. Take care mate, all the best to you, your missus and son whatever you choose.
