So I had an idea for a fun game while driving in to work today.
I was surrounded by Mercury's that had taken an awesome legendary nameplate and...well...ruined it.
Here are my examples, which in my mind are the winners already...so prove me wrong with something WORSE! Place an image of the original awesome car, and the terrible reincarnation in your reply!
Mercury Montego. I think you all know how I feel about the abuse of my wonderful Montego by calling this CVT V6 pile of boring a Montego. (Of course I used my own car as the awesome original version!)
And the Mercury Monterrey. How did a full size powerhouse from the 60's turn into...A MINIVAN!?!? Now check out the old Marauder version, is it me or is this thing really close in cool factor to a classic Lincoln?! I obviously know the connection there but I think this is a really, really cool/clean car!
Alright OPPO what do you got?

Staying on the Merc theme: Mercury Cougar

Mustang II, with a 140hp V8.
Then there's the monstrosity the Thunderbird evolved into:

Subaru Impreza. Yes, yes they are fixing it, but god it didn't look good for a while there.

Both a valiant entry, though at least the Mustang II had good front suspension!

Man, that newer cougar could have been so good. If they had thrown the Mustang under that body it would've been a rocket.

I dunno, I've never liked the Impreza look even the STI. Though I guess some people like it.

My uncle had one of the newer ones, never ran right from the day he got it. Same with most people who bought one. It did need Mustang guts.

yeah I knew someone who had the V6 and she hated it. I always thought they could have been so much more than they were. This modern coupe body with a Mustang under it would have been pretty sweet, even if it was just the V6.

It wasn't so much the look as the balls out rally machine the Impreza WRX STI was, it became a AWD family sedan in just a few short years.

This is true it definitely made that change over.
And it wasn't for the better (accept for their sales).

And that is what the auto industry is becoming, making crappy cars that make you lots of money.

GM is certainly guilty. Just sticking to Chevy...

I was about to post this. My mother had a post '86 one in the early 90's in blue. It was such a dreadful car. I was glad and sad that it crashed. She got a Taurus wagon next.

I agree on the Celica thing... Some generations were cool, others were not. The two generations before the last celica nameplate were not that good looking, and the US didn't get anything like an AllTrac or GT-4.
But I always figured Scion tC was a corolla Coupe more than a Celica coupe, especially with it's camry-sourced economy I4, not a performance I4.
Scion FRS should have been a new boxer-powered MR2, for truly proper handling.
Scion tC gone RWD would be closer to an AE86, which was a RWD Corolla 3-door economy car in the 80s.
Celica, Supra, and MR2 were better performance cars than AE86 in the 80s, and they should have been revived first.

Oh man, I didn't even know that existed....and clearly they should have just let it die.
