Built to rival the 911, like everyone else, McLaren's P13 will carry a twin-turbo V8 engine producing up to 444hp. The P13 (codename) will share the same MonoCell chassis as it's older siblings.

A reveal at the 2014 Paris motor show has been mooted, with sales due to start in the spring of 2015. The P1's production is due to end at the same time as the P13's starts.

The P13 will be offered first as a coupé, with a retractable hard-top Spider version to follow in 2016. The MonoCell chassis is able to underpin coupé and convertible bodies with no loss in rigidity.

Prices will fall around £120,000 (The 12C currently starts at £176,000, while the sold-out P1 is being resold for well over £1,000,000), so while the new P13 may not directly compete with the dentist-mobile-standard-911, it will directly face the 911 turbo and other higher range models.

Designers will usually draw the rims oversized on the concept drawings to show design. Tires aren't really too important in concept drawings.

Is that what that is? I am so glad I know that's the reason why. It always bugged me so much

I hadn't seen this news. Thanks for sharing.

Shame it's priced higher than the Carrera S. I live in the US but assuming the C2S costs less than £120,000 in the UK.

If it was priced similar to the C2S it would be a massive sales hit. Even if it costs a bit more it would still sell in numbers. You can get a lightly optioned C2S with an MT for $100,000 here.

That, and to fill the actual travel of the wheel. You know the wheel needs clearance and room to move, but the wheels in sketches tend to fill the entire area of the wheel's intended travel.
That, and it looks better.

Are they recycling the 3.8 motor for this too? Fuuucckkk. This is why McLaren is seen as boring. Imagine if every single Ferrari used a less exciting version of the 458 motor.

Base Carrera is £73k, C2S is £83k.
Turbo (closest rival) is £118k, while the Turbo S is £140k.
GT3 is £100k.

Plus a bollock-load of optional extras, of course.

Cool, thank you.

I would guess then that this new car will only make a sizable dent in 911 Turbo sales. People that just want a fast sports car and don't need it to be exotic looking will continue to buy the C2S, or buy the new Corvette for less. And people who want a capable high end track car can get the GT3 for less.

I could definitely see it taking a huge chunk of 911 Turbo sales though. Most people that buy the Turbo buy it not because they need the extra speed but because of the status of having the fastest 911 (at least in a straight line). There is more status in buying this new P13 or something like an Audi R8 V10.

The really interesting thing to me about this new car is how it could take away sales from more expensive cars like the Ferrari 458 and its big brother the 12C. Cars are just so damn fast these days. I would definitely consider this car if I was ever in the market for a new mid-engine high end sports car. Even if I could afford the Ferrari offering I would consider the slower and cheaper McLaren. You can't use the extra speed on the street and I'm not a good enough driver to extract all of the car's potential on the track anyhow. 444HP would definitely be enough for me.

Especially because I hear nothing but glowing reviews of the McLaren sales and service quality. Quite a few people have said that the way they treat their customers is night and day better than Ferrari.

I wouldn't discount the GT3. Both it and the P13 - or whatever they call the production one - are rear-drive, dual-clutch (presumably), driver-focused cars from famous brands, and a GT3 could probably be optioned up to nearly £120k with relative ease. What McLaren option lists are like though, I don't know, but frankly they'll be close enough for someone buying that sort of car to consider both (can a baby 12C be £20k more car than a 991 GT3?). But yeah, P13 versus a used 12C will be a decision for some potential buyers to make too.

If I was rich i would be that guy with every McLaren I could get my hands on. I would forsake all other car purchases until I had and I would do such crazy things as Daily drive them until snow started falling....then I would take out my rally fighter....just sayin

I was almost super excited, but realized it won't be priced under $100k. Not that I'm saying it should be, but that was hope that I could someday afford a used McLaren.

I didn't mean to discount the GT3. I actually think the GT3 sales are pretty safe and won't suffer much because of the baby 12C. It's cheaper and N/A so it's probably a better buy in the long run for someone who wants to keep their car long term and doesn't care if it is mistaken as a regular 911 by non gearheads. Even if the baby 12C comes stock with options that the GT3 doesn't the lower base price should keep the GT3 cost competitive.

The 911 Turbo sales could definitely be hurt. Who even buys the 911 Turbo anymore? I don't know anyone who wouldn't rather have the GT3. I am a big 911 fan and have a C2. If I ever upgraded it would be to a newer generation C2S or a GT3. I would never buy a Turbo unless I found a really good deal on an older one. If I was going to spend big money on a new Turbo I would much rather have the more driver focused baby 12C.

It will be interesting to see what the new car looks like and how it performs. Competition is a good thing. And the new car might be somewhat attainable used in 10 years for people who aren't super loaded but make decent money. I really hope McLaren is successful with all their road cars and thrives. They seem like a really cool company.

So they built a car named after "Pole Position" and now they are going to build another one named after "Backmarker"? Brilliant, covering all the bases.

That's what I've come to understand. Just one of the things I've picked up from my two or so years browsing Oppo and Jalopnik.
