Sexy livery, solid line-up (Neuville, Sordo, Atkinson, Hanninen), someone fast-forward us to Monte Carlo already.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 07:49 |

We need a homologation version already.

I saw the FB icon on a toilet paper package, of all things. Kept pushing it last time I had some time to waste (nudge, nudge) on the toilet - nothing happened.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 07:57 |

Hyundai? In my WRC? What next, Hyundai F1*?
*All jokes aside, I would very much like to see Hyundai F1.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 08:11 |

Well, this Hyundai WRC team it sorta makes sense. It says "Follow us on HyundaiWRC", which following logic means it's their user name on all three sites.
On the other hand, it looks stupid and you think "WTF" as I just did until you realize it's their user name.
I think you missed the point of the toilet paper package. It's a philosophical thing that states the package is like facebook, taking all the crap people have and accepting it to make you clean. It all goes to the same place, a place you Only go if you want to see and smell all that crap.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 08:30 |

That is both ugly and beautiful, but it's also a perfect description of what the FB is. Bravo!

Why no Veloster WRC?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 08:56 |
|
Yeah the veloster is the brands 'sports' car yet the i20 is the one they take racing?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:20 |
|
Because Veloster is not competing against the cars in the B segment. Veloster is a C segment car, like Golf or DS4.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:22 |
|
omg the red detailing in the headlight well. This needs to be standard on everything.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:22 |
|
I imagine visibility would also be down in the Veloster, like why Toyota went from the Celica to the Corolla.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:25 |
|
Hyundai ran an Elantra in WRC in the early 2000's...F1 would be cool, but I doubt Eccelstone would allow Hyundai to run unless they paid some big bills
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:26 |
|
It does look good. It's also good that Chris Atkinson is in the team. I'll be watching with interest.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:27 |

Hyundai was in the wrc over a decade ago.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:28 |

Speaking of visibility, check out some of the Petter Solberg onboard videos from his time in Ford. The way he is kind of stretching up to see where the hell he's going with the car makes me think some of his crashes could have been visibility related.

This is the start for FerMorcillo, Hyundai fan :) huzzah !
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:30 |

The rear looks a little plain, don't you think?
Needs more decals.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:30 |
|
Why dont the sell a consumer version of this car with the widebody fenders and gigantor wing on the showroom? It would sell. They can even give it a boost in HP by just adding a small 6psi turbo to the stock engine.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:32 |
|
Cool looking? Sure, Hyundai (like Kia) is doing well. Cool est ? Not really.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:33 |
|
Patience. You see that "N" on the car. That is the new line of high-performance Hyundais, sort of what Volkswagen is doing with their R line. I told them about the fenders, they're tasty. And I imagine this road car will definitely have 1.6 turbo.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:33 |

I've been a fan of Atkinson for a while, shame he hasn't been in WRC since Subaru left a few years ago. Looking forward to see his return.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:34 |
|
Do they still do that? At all?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:35 |

Oh it'll get decals alright. Mud and snow and dust. :)
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:35 |

I'm glad, this is something that could actually help revive WRC a bit.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:39 |

I spoke with Chris yesterday and he's quite excited about the car. I'll have a full piece on it soon.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:41 |

It does look very different from the mundane version (yes, there's a 3-door as well)

Hyundai gave away this for free in the Real Racing 3 game a couple of weeks ago. It's too bad there isn't a rally/dirt stage in that game but I mostly use it kill time and procrastinate. Kind of a fun car to mess around with compared to the other available vehicles.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:49 |
|
What tells you that isn't underway?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:52 |
|
Market wise I think it is time for Hyundai to capitalise on this and offer a WRC packsage of this car.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:52 |
|
Needs more Subie...
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:53 |
|
Hyundai has been in WRC for quite some time.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:54 |
|
Follow them closely, because that's exactly what they're going to do.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:54 |
|
it use to be with Group A, that every WRC had a similar, albeit, less powerful version of their actual rally car.
That meant a Turbo, a 2.0L engine, AWD, and a wider track.
that was awesome, you could pick up a Celica GT-Four or a Cosworth RS and get an idea of how awesome they were.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 10:56 |
|
Bring back homologation requirement rules!
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:04 |
|
Hyundai needs to sell it over here.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:05 |
|
Meh. It's not as cool as the Polo or the DS3.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:06 |
|
Hyundai continues to get cooler as a car maker, but when the heck are they going to ditch their shitty 90's swooshy H logo for something a little more...grown up?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:13 |
|
It's a totally ordinary car, made absolutely bonkers. Perfect ride height, wide fenders, great paint job. Great details, good proportions. I'd make a case for it as better than any other.
In fact, I'll take it as a challenge - can anyone find a better looking new racecar?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:18 |
|
This looks awesome!! However, I can't think of any car that looks awful in rally guise.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:38 |
|
They will launch a new line of high-performance cars, the N line, based on WRC development, so expect 1.6 turbos, advanced-y suspension, etc.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:39 |
|
Good point!
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:39 |
|
The 2014 Mazda 6 looks great in red or black.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:39 |
|
I agree. And I think they realize it, as they don't seem to use it on premium models. It's a funny leftover.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:50 |
|
"Quick, what's the coolest-looking racecar for 2014? Hah, you're wrong. It's the brand-new Hyundai i20 WRC car."
Have we already forgotten this?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:51 |
|
Hmm. I like it but remember Hyundai completely SCRAPPED all motorsports funding in the middle of this year (no explanation) leaving the Rhys Millen stuck paying for his ride up Pikes Peak. There is no telling what their actual follow through will be.
I actually like the new Hyundai line up - Own one even.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 11:52 |
|
Orlove claimed it, he's so brave.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:00 |
|
I don't like what they do with their premium models either. In those cases eliminating any kind of logo almost hurts the car appearance. It's missing something.
Additionally, Honda sorta has a pretty firm grasp on logos that are the letter H.
I have no idea what a good alternative would be though. Hyundai means Modernity in Korean, so you could go all sorts of directions with that idea.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:00 |
|
I wouldn't really call the Fiesta and the DS3 "sports cars"...
And the Veloster looks quite a bit larger than the i20 (haven't actually seen a Veloster on the roads yet, so not certain), and small = manoeuvrable.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:05 |
|
All we need is to make WRC more accessible for good drivers (not just affluent ones) and we could be back to a golden era like the 90's! Very pleased with the list of manufacturers
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:08 |
|
The rear end is tight.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:15 |

In actuality, the Genesis HCD-14 concept has a halfway decent badge. It could be easily changed to read HYUNDAI instead of Genesis and placed on all models. Although I feel it's a somewhat lazy attempt at mimicking the Aston Martin badge, which is one of the best ever.

reminds me of this save from Sweden, what was that, season before last?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:41 |
|
Damn it, if there ever was a "I cannot stop watching" gif, this is the one.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:42 |
|
I assume this is eligible as a 2014 race car.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:47 |
|
Do you have a video of that, this gif keeps rebooting my brain? Looks like he narrowly missed someone casually standing in the middle of nowhere by the road?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:47 |
|
The think the car is sweet, but the cursing is completely unnecessary and unprofessional.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:49 |

Aesthetics are entirely subjective, of course, but...
The 208 R5 is as a French mouth to your Hyundai's snail.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 12:51 |

I'd take the Hyundai
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:06 |

I used to have the video, I'll look for it. It was day 2 of the rally, that's all the info I had saved.

Hey, Raphael Orlove is the man to talk to about that. Although it's not your fault you wanted to reply to his post and ended up replying to mine, because Kinja.

Blue and orange? Sure looks gray and red to me....
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:14 |

Funny shades, both of them. They do vary from red-blue to orange-gray, depending on how the file was saved, if it includes color profile, whether your browser is using profiles or not.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:22 |

If they can manage to bring a non-livery version to showrooms, I may consider purchasing a Hyundai for the first time.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:25 |
|
I think it's safe to expect they'll do what Volkswagen did with Polo R, but maybe Hyundai will add more to the road car. Around 200 HP minimum, Polo has 220 but from a 2 liter engine while WRC's are 1.6 turbos.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:41 |
|
Evidently, Hyundai talked about doing F1 a number of years ago (2008ish, I think), but obviously nothing's happened. Though I'm doubtful they ever will, I really think they should. It'd obviously be crazy expensive, but what better way to give your engineers some experience with high-performance engineering and technology?
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:52 |
|
Ask me in a couple months...
![]() 12/10/2013 at 13:55 |
|
It might be a tacit admission that the higher models should have been a "Genesis" brand, rather than models. Speaking of that, this morning I saw an Equus (rare to begin with) with the silly KDM hood ornament. Sometimes local tastes don't translate to other markets.
That concept badge is definitely influenced by Aston Martin, maybe not suprising, as the brand isn't always original.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 14:18 |
|
Certainly not going to find it in F1...
![]() 12/10/2013 at 14:22 |
|
That would be a perfect way to make all the manufacturers leave the WRC
![]() 12/10/2013 at 14:23 |
|
Hyundai scrapped all their other funding so they could focus purely on WRC. They're all in and committed to a multi-year program.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 14:31 |

Being Australian, I like to keep an eye on what our people are doing, but, like you I was a fan of Chris' driving regardless. Hope he goes well.

I have my doubts
![]() 12/10/2013 at 16:03 |

Doesn't need to be specifically for the WRC class, could be for Group A for example.

![]() 12/10/2013 at 18:12 |

I find the Veloster to be over-styled, but this is equally as bad as an example of under-styled.

Done.

Better than their last effort?
Maybe.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 19:51 |

Nice color scheme. Seems they wanted to be as close to Gulf Oil livery as possible without inviting a lawyer calling (I Googled to see if Shell was part of Gulf nowadays - no). But I like it, it's contemporary.
![]() 12/10/2013 at 22:04 |
|
mmmm, the C7 is gonna look good, and I am sure it's gonna sound better than this Hyundai, if that's any consolation
![]() 12/10/2013 at 23:34 |
|
I dunno if that could be called a motif yet, but it definitely identified it to me as a Hyundai before I'd read any of the text.
![]() 12/11/2013 at 02:53 |
|
WRC doesn't mandate that anymore for the top level of rallying, so don't expect to EVER see another homologation car again in the near future.
It's why the WRX is so uninspired, it's just a mid sized awd sedan now. If it were a "rally" car it would be much smaller and more "hardcore"
![]() 12/11/2013 at 04:36 |
|
It can't be worse than their last effort. Unless they throw the cars into the sea when they arrive to Monte Carlo next year.
![]() 12/11/2013 at 04:37 |

O.Z. Racing of some kind.
![]() 12/11/2013 at 08:14 |
