I didn't look through the entire list, but I didn't see any "athletes" who died this year from injuries sustained in a game.
There were 2 race car drivers in the list though.

Unfortunately, I'm sure you're right on that too. Even at Purdue, an engineering school famed for its astronauts, I've heard STEM majors ask who Carpenter was when told. Sad state of the world when one of the technological heroes of our nation dies in relative anonymity, at least to the younger crowd.
