I don't know why it took me so long... but I figured out why the 2015 Mustang looks familiar to me...

It looks like a normalized, down-market Ferrari F12. The quarter windows and inset rear glass, and slightly awkward tail panel treatment (each a bit odd in their own ways)

The front chin spoiler shows some slight similarities as well.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The ferrari's chin spoiler is obviously more prominent, more widely splayed, and the main grille is low, rather than the mustang's more prominent upper grille, and smaller lower grille between the bumper and the chin spoiler, but the three-segment flying-surface chin spoiler and turned down 'angry' corners on the sides have some similarity.

The roof has a similar step down in the center, and the side window graphic is also quite similar....

Ford designers may have gotten a hint for the trapezoidal upper grille from the Aston Martin, but I think the Mustang designers have taken a long look at the F12 Berlinetta Ferrari, while working on the S550 Mustang's design.

I've learned today that the Mustang looks like a Ferrari, Prius, Toyota, Accord, Jesus, a bird, and Dwayne The Rock Johnson

I swear, some of these articles are like reading responses to ink blot tests, or just a bunch of people staring off into the clouds.

Ford clearly hit gold here, we're all talking about this thing.

They clearly put something in the water.

I respectfully disagree. The rear of the Mustang is a lot more pronounced (not to mention flatter), and a hell of a lot more simpler. The F12 also has it's rear arches integrated into the back. The same could be said for the side profile. Also to me the F12 looks noticeably more front-mid engined then the Mustang, as it seems the cockpit is noticeably nearer to the rear axle then the Mustang. I will give you one point though; the greenhouses do mirror each other well.

So, it looks like the F12 because all their design features are different except for TWO minor features which are very similar. Got it.

My FR-S shares way more with the F12 than the new Mustccord does.

This little kink is literally the only similarity.

Other than that, they're both red, have four wheels, two doors, some lights and an engine at the front.

I didn't say they were exact copies, nor did I imply it.

And of course, a 2-seat F12 with a V12 engine and a lower nose is going to be more cab-aftward than a 2+2.

The side window graphic is remarkably similar.

The center-dropped roofline is similar.

the inset rear glass with prominent C-pillars is a similar effect.

The airfoil-like chin spoiler is slightly similar, albeit not exactly the same.

The tail panel is concaved under an integrated-bodywork spoiler, but the ferrari's obviously isn't black, and the tail lights are different, and the Mustang doesn't have the diving center section, but does have the center piece of the diffuser panel painted body color, instead of the rear fascia splitting the rear diffuser down the center.

Ford also added air extractors to the hood on the forward front quarters of the hood skin... something Mustang hasn't done before, even the GT500's extractor is centered and more prominent. At least Ford didn't copy the duct-through front fenders of the F12.

I am not saying Ford copied the design blatantly, but there are too many similarities to think that the Ford designers didn't take a long look at the details of the F12, just as they have taken a look at Aston Martin's design language.
