So I know perhaps it's to early for speculation but with the new Chevy SS about to debut and car magazines are beginning to review the new SS it got me thinking, what would I want to own? With the tower of power that is the V8 engine in both of these cars it is a hard desicion. The Chevy SS/Pontiac G8 are from what I have read better handling cars, also they match the Charger SRT8 in the performance category. I just wish they wouldn't look so bland, the Charger just kind of screams "look at me, I'm ridiculous!" And personally I kind of enjoy that, it's a child and it looks like a big hot wheel, not to mention the SRT8 comes with 425 or 470hp. So at the end of the day I think I would take the Charger.
What about you guys?

When I'm up to no good, I love the Charger because the thing screams ANARCHY! But when I roll by the boys in blue, or am going to the grocery store, I prefer the the SS. It's a good looking car that doesn't show it's true face until it's past you.

Check out R&T's summary sheet (PDF). They're evenly matched enough to make it a styling choice. I'd pick the G8/SS, as I like the body more. Lateral acceleration is the same, the G8/SS has a little-bit larger trunk, they're within 10hp of each-other, the G8 weighs about 185lb less, they brake at about the same distances and their acceleration is very close.

The SS is very, very bland/subtle...and I think intentionally. But if you look back at the G8 GXP, it's the opposite of bland, dual "hood scoops"(I put in parenthesis because I have no idea if they are functional) and radical colors:

I'll give it too you that the GXP does look aggressive, I just think they could have done a better job making it look less like a Pontiac like they did with the Solstice which looks great in my opinion. Of course style though is largely subjective!

Yeah it is crazy how close they are I just wish the Charger came with a manual! Times might even be a little quicker

Definitely subjective, fun to bicker about though lol.
I really REALLY love the look of it in blue, in fact was looking at a used one for sale in blue just yesterday...salvage title though...never know.
I think the Chevy is intentionally subtle. It's for that mid level executive that doesn't want anyone to notice his insanely fast sedan.

Times might be quicker but the Charger is probably more consistent, so if you're doing bracket racing it'd work better.

Charger because the SS looks like dudu IMO. The front is incredibly bland and the body side is front 1999. I wouldn't spend 44k to look out dated.

the SS does look bland, but even the base G8 looks cool.

I haven't driven an SS or G8 GXP yet, however, I will say that the Charger is surprisingly fun to drive.

I am a sucker for anything blue! But yeah salvage can be scary. It's just too bad these cars weren't offered with a manual (besides a select few GXPs)

Is the weight pretty noticeable or does it carve the corners well?

Eh, I don't mind. I'd rather have an auto for my daily driver. I do about an hour each way to work in traffic...and I have a bad knee. I love the color blue they put on it too. I'd buy one in a minute if I had the $$.
My fun car (the montego) just so happened to be an auto as well, but that increased the value of it because old car auto rarity.
for the record I am 100% capable of driving manual.

In daily traffic I can understand how driving a manual could become tiresome, and these cars are basically rocket ship daily drivers!

Which is why I'd love to have one!

While driving it I found that the weight wasn't noticeable, and when it was, you still felt the interaction with the road (unlike driving a Chrysler 300). Hell, I drove an auto once and I was able to get it sideways through intersections.
The only time I really felt the weight was when I drove onto a football field and it had rained a few days prior. The car sunk an inch in, and after I stopped to get out and talk to my now girlfriend, in the three minutes the car sank at least another few inches into the field.
TLDR - You don't notice the weight while driving, only while stopped on soft surfaces.

I was an owner of a Charger R/T, non-R&T version, and while it doesn't feel heavy, body roll is very substantial. handling and grip is surprisingly good though putting that aside

Well thats unfortunate… How did you get the car out of the mud was it stuck?

Well, she lives an hour and a half flight away during the school year so I'd just gotten off the plane, still wearing a suit from work and didn't want to ruin it doing the lifting. She'd panicked too much and couldn't figure out how to drive (she doesn't have a full license yet and I'm not glad for that haha).
So after trying to rock it for 10 minutes and nothing happening, I called up a buddy who came and lifted the front end while I put it in reverse and touched the gas. We got it out after 5 minutes of that and didn't stop the momentum until we got it on sold earth.
After that incident, I was not shocked to see the weight of the Charger. It's a heavy car but doesn't feel like it driving.

Charger; A close second would be the G8 but I can still get a Charger with warranty. Plus; the refreshed model looks like it wants to eat people and the SRT8 is even more wild
I love everything about my ridiculous blue Daytona Charger (and they handle decently with the Track Pack at least for a 4400 pound dinosaurmobile)

If I had the opportunity I would love to buy a Daytona Charger I know they are not the fastest, but they still gotta be able to kick you back in the seat and they just look awesome!

They have plenty of hoonability and they don't drink premium so there's that benefit. Plus what self respecting Opponaut wouldn't want to drive a real life Hot Wheel?

Could not agree more!

The Chevy SS is obviously not going for that muscle car look that realy belongs to the 2 door coupes. But rather that sleeper/european look and quality.
What's with the pic of the old pre-2011 Charger? I guess to go along with the older Pontiac.

When you really get down to it, they all share the same basic silhouette.

Yes to go along with the older Pontiac and with to respond to your other response the devil is always in the details!
