I didn't have time to change my own oil so I came to a 10 minute drive through shop. An Oil change ranges from $45 to $85! Then they came in and said my airfilter was bad that I replaced 2,000 miles ago and pulled the dumped leaves on my cabin air filter trick. And then said they were $20 each and would be $60 anywhere else?!??!

Please remind me why I do car maintenance myself.

Have you considered writing an angry letter to Yelp?

Yeah, you should definitely write a strongly worded letter.

LOL

If I can't do my own oil changes (snow on the ground is my only stopper normally) I take to my normal mechanic, never a drive through. I worked one for 3 days before I left, place was horrendous.

Those places suck.

And those are also reasons that I speak to the customers as opposed to the managers.

The management will try to fuck them over saying they need it now.

When I speak to them I just say you need brakes soon, or look forward to it in a month or so. Something like that.

I can't stand when people try and scam customers. It's just wrong, be up front and they will come back, even though you don't get the extra 500$ or whatever your trying to get.

You make the money in the long run when they come back and tell their friends about good service or whatever.

Where the fuck do they charge $45 for an oil change? My normal mechanic will do it for $25.

They are using winter air filters which are specifically designed to increase ze mpg's in the winter time, hence the $10 upcharge. Also they are using Winter oil and filter which are very very rare, hence the 20-60 extra for the oil change.

Facts.

It was one of those times where you are in such shock, you don't know what to do. I wish I would have been prepared for what happened.

I've been slammed at work, No time to do it and snow. I should crawl up under my car though and double check to make sure it isn't the exact same filter dated for the exact same date I changed my filter last.

I know! I was expecting anywhere from $25 ot $30! I used to buy the recycled Valvoline oil. if you turned in your old oil you got a $20 store credit. On sale, the oil cost $20. So I am used to getting my oil changes for $4 in filters.

YEP. I highly recommend that.

I've even heard of those places trying to upcharge for a new oil filter...like that wasn't built in to your oil change cost?! WTF?

but yeah I was at a valvoline for 3 days, the one tech almost destroyed a turbo audi by not priming the oil filter, woman driver was about to turn the key when the manager was like WHOA WHOA WHOA HOLD ON, did you guys prime that?!?!?!..."no" UGH, I was in the other bay at the time.

I even had a dealer that I bought my Milan at blatantly put on the wrong oil filter. (disclaimer: I bought a used Mercury at a Dodge dealer, first oil change was free with purchase, even if it was a different brand). The oil filter was so small in comparison to the original, you could see the ring/mark from older filters AROUND the new one. I was furious.

That's the kind of shit you run into in those "Drive-thru" shops.

Avoid them like the plague!

Yea I had some chips sealed in my window and Safelite recommended that I put in new wiper blades. They wanted to charge me $22 and give me some cheapo ones. I declined and bought my own.

Ehh...It's done...I've learned my lesson. I'm going to go out on lunch and see if he shoved the leaves back in my Cabin Air Filter Holder Boxy Thing (Technical Name-Let me know if you need simpler terms)

I don't know where you are, but in California you have to sign an estimate for all work to be performed and approve any changes before the work is performed.

I used to take my Focus to a chain oil change place. One time I went in and signed the estimate for the oil change, and when they were done they had changed my air filter for $60.

I was like, I didn't approve to have that work done on my car...and the guy was like well we already installed it...and I was like either I just got a free air filter or you need to uninstall it because I'm not paying for that. The look on his face as I was making him take it out and put the old one back in was priceless. I'm sure he thought he could take advantage of me because I'm a woman. He lost because I know $60 is a rip off and I know the law.

The best part is that he damaged the old filter when he put it back in, so I called the manager later and got the oil change for free too.

I'm from WV, and there has to be a verbal agreement before work is performed. That still doesn't knock out fraud. Like the time my girlfriend got an inspection sticker and walked out w a $130 bill for wiper blades and a lightbulb.
