I see that some usernames are more than 30 characters. What's the trick?

I think if you change your display or screen name it should be fine but if you change your blog url it may lose authorship.

Screen name is your user name, I don't think you can change it. Display name is what everyone sees, and no it doesn't affect your authorship.
