So my brother had $3300 fall into his lap ( almost literally) yesterday and really wants to get a replacement for his POS continental. Right now his heart is set on a truck preferably one of these, which I whole heartily agree with.

What about a Crown Victoria? They are a bit expensive though. (a little over 3k)

Looks sweet, but $2.3k seems like a lot for a nearly 40-year-old truck with crap tires, shot rear brakes, rust in the bed, an engine with a mild skip is a lot, especially since it isn't 4WD. That's what my coworker this summer spent for a 15-year-old in better condition.
I don't know that much about trick pricing, but I'd bet that a more reasonable offer would be $1.8k, and then sink the rest into getting it into top condition.

My last car was a $1,500 beater, and I loved it so.

$1,500 final (after you get the work priced).

You can actually get a pretty decent truck for that price. I helped my little brother shop for a sub $3k car, and while he got an N-body Cutlass because it was a steal, we found tons of S-10's and F150's and the like all in pretty decent shape. If he can find one in good condition and for a good price, I don't think you could really do better. Is he open to a manual truck? I found 5-speeds were going for a few hundred less than comparable autoboxes, so maybe he can keep that in mind.

Clean truck. I'm surprised the rust isn't worse.

Because I need a backseat for the baby and I would love a 4x4 winter truck:

This. I would own it if I didn't have three (technically two and a half, but let's go with three) cars already. Anyone want to buy a 5spd Civic with 80k miles to open up space?

My first car, a 1988 Ford Mustang GT, was less than what your brother is shopping around with and that got me, as a young lad, RWD, a V8 and a stick.
I loved that car.

The answer is always Miata.

That is unless you are a 6'6 monster of a dude which my brother is. Then the answer anything but a Miata.

I'm 6'5 and something. But I'm skinny, so I'm the exception that proves the rule.

What would I personally get with $3000?
Ekthe
Either a MK1 Toyota MR2 or a 1st gen Miata.
Or, more likely, I'd drop it into my Audi in the form of an EFI conversion and some suspension and tire upgrades.

I'd probably try to find a decent Volvo 850 wagon.

The best Ford PU's are 351W, 3-speed overdrive (4sMT) or C6AT, 2WD and 9inch.
Note: I have a 78 E-150 w 351W, 3-speed overdrive, 411 9inch Posi.
And it's the best work van ever. So if he wants auto, and it's a good PU, go for it.

Depends on what his needs are. If he doesn't have to rely on a vehicle, old trucks are awesome and make for good entry into the "muscle" market.
If he has to use his car everyday? Not something old.
