He’s not a small person, and he doesn’t review small cars, he is small in popularity... poorly written, I know...
Also, as I write this I’m realizing t his whole post sounds like a big promotion piece. It’s not, I swear, just bear with me.
I’ve been toying with the idea of making video car reviews. I like sharing my opinions (as does everyone), I like driving cars (as I assume you all do too), and I like to think I’m half decent at making videos/content (as some of you may be as well) .
As some of you may know, I’ve been writing for HotCars.com on an incredibly part time basis while doing college stuff and stressing about the world (the debates didn’t help either) . It’s great because I learn about cars, and then I write about them, and they say the best way to learn about something is to teach it to someone else. Maybe that’s bull crap, but I believe it.
Anyways, my employer has a YouTube channel, which they don’t advertise on their site or anything. A nd one of my colleagues (I guess you could call him a colleague, we both make content for HotCars and their Canadian conglomerate Valnet) is making reviews of some very cool cars, his most recent being on the McLaren GT:
Now, for a video pulling a sub 100 view count, it’s kind of hard to figure out how he managed to get his hands on a McLaren, but he did, as well as a ton of other high end, luxury vehicles. And from what I can tell, he’s the only video content creator for the site.
So I reached out, and we’ve scheduled a phone call for tonight at 6:30, where I’m going to ask him a handful of questions, some to get to know him as a reviewer, and other logistical stuff like camera gear, what he likes to focus on, and how he manages to get his hands on the cars (I’m also going to offer up my video editing services, or anything else I can do. Make a connection, ya know? He’s based in Miami, which means actually helping him out with a shoot isn’t out of the picture).
But I wanted to open up the floor in case any of you had questions that I could ask, on your behalf, to someone who’s getting paid to make video reviews on cars. That way, if any of you are interested in some tricks to the trade or just want to know all that goes into it, you can learn a little more too. Because at the end of the day, this “work call” is all about learning how to do the same thing.
(I’m writing a big list of conversation points, things I can ask, and I’ll put your question on their. However, I’d like this to be a natural conversation, and if the conversation doesn’t flow in the direction of your question, then it may go unanswered. But I’ll do my damnedest to get some sort of answer for it).
If all goes well, I’ll have a system for making review videos myself, proper equipment, car sourcing, career path, and all. I’ll post the answer s to the questions I get later on (tonight or tomorrow). So, ask away!

Is HotCars part of The Drive? Even the FP is starting to look the same.

No they’re not, though the resemblance is uncanny. Valnet is to HotCars what G/O Media is to Jalopnik, and some of their more popular subdivisions include Screen Rant and The Richest, which is pretty cool. The Drive is controlled by Active Media.

Cool, thank you for introducing new sources of neat content. Perfect timing as I was getting bored of refreshing the same sites :). As for your current endeavor , seeing $100k+ cars is fun but I also like seeing the more pedestrian top of the line, minus one or two option packages that are theoretically more attainable and asking how close can I get to the enjoyment of the top trim model, and, is that even needed on normal roads.

Oh I absolutely agree! I’m not so super-car inclined myself, because I highly doubt I’ll ever amass enough wealth to afford one. I’d love to get my hands on average cars, used cars even that might get overlooked in one’s car search. I’ll ask Gabriel about less flamboyant cars today for sure.
I’m glad I’ve introduced you to a new source of automotive content, and I hope you enjoy reading it and all that jazz.
