Got new tires today to replace the worn out BFG K02 set that was on the truck when I bought it. Nitto Ridge Grapplers in the OEM LT315/70R17 (35 inch) size. These are some beefy boys with an aggressive sidewall design that fill the Raptor’s fender flares quite nicely. There are actually different patterns on both sides of the tire and I had to go back to the shop after getting home and realizing they only matched 3 of 4.

The Ridge Grappler is one of a handful of tires in the new-ish “R/T” category that sits somewhere between an all-terrain (“A/T”) like the OEM BFGoodrich tires and a mud-terrain (“M/T”). Basically the idea is to put more space between the tread blocks of an A/T without going all the way to a full M/T design. If done properly they should be nowhere near as loud on the road as a typical M/T but have improved traction off road over an A/T.

Kinja'd!!!

It sounds like all marketing to me but I have a friend who swears by these Nittos on his curren-gen F150 and another who loves the Toyo Open Country R/T (lifted 4Runner) which as far as I can tell is made from the same carcass in the same factory but with a different tread pattern. These are quieter and handle way better on the road than I was expecting - though the old tires were so worn anything would help. Haven’t had a chance to play around off road yet. I should be able to fix that this weekend.

Tires, install, disposal fees, an alignment, and sales tax did sting a bit at just over $1600 all-in, but I knew that going into buying a big stupid used truck . Hopefully tires are the one really big ticket expense on this truck. The shop told me the front brake pads are gone as well. Those are the same as all F-150s from this generation and I just ordered them for $55 online to install myself this weekend.

Super beefy. Now you gotta find a nice technical trail to break em in!

Those look good - but damn that’s an expensive set of tires.

That’s the plan. Hopefully I can find something the truck fits down.  Most of the more interesting trails here are overgrown pretty good since a lot of trail maintenance didn’t happen due to the pandemic.

Yeah anything name brand in this size is basically $280-330 per tire.  So it’s like $1300 just for the tires before any install costs and tax.   Worst part is I’m guessing they’ll last at most 40k.

Those look like tires for a front end loader.

If I can still find one of these in decent shape in a few years when I don’t need 3 rows any more I’m getting one. That just looks like too much fun.

Never mind the fact that I live in urban Houston and most weeks as far off road as I get is the gravel parking lot for kids flag football.

From what I’ve seen a lot of people do just buy them for the look so there are a lot of them out there that haven’t been abused off-road.  But they do take a bit more care and feeding than a lower-spec F-150 so you do need to hunt a little for one that hasn’t been owned by someone who bought it on a 7 year loan and didn’t set money aside for maintenance.

They are absurd. I don’t think I would go this far if it were a DD .  Super fortunate to live somewhere with trails close by and every other Friday off.

Completely off topic for this thread - but what are your thoughts on NM ski season? We have come to Santa Fe 3 of the last 4 years between Ch ristmas and New Years, but I’m not e ven sure Ski Santa Fe will be open. That has a looking in Colorado, which we generally avoid just due to the cost difference.

Browsing vrbo for houses we will make a decision in the next week or so, houses are going quick in NM and CO.

You got a heckuva deal.  For a Raptor with 137k miles on it, the asking price in my neck of the woods is over 35k.

Jeez. The guy I bought it from asked me after we shook hands   if I was just gonna take it out of state and flip it.   The prices on these things... I get it but I don’t get it. Tons of fun and part of the reason I bought it was that it should hold value ok... but $35k... its a lot for what these are.

Never off topic! This is a really tricky one. Nobody here has anything official yet . Santa Fe announced plans then went back on them today. The Governor is basically the decider of what businesses can do here and she still hasn’t said anything about ski resorts so any of their social distancing plans are basically unofficial so far. On top of that TX is currently on the 14-day quarantine list (or come with negative test results) but that could change and I don’t know if it’s really being enforced. I feel like this will get sorted out before the end of ski season but it might be a while... December plans seem risky, especially for people coming in from out of state.

If you can swing Colorado that seems more likely to be open. I would still call ahead where you plan to ski and see what their plans are before booking a vrbo . My brother-in-law manages a hotel in Aspen and mentioned the other day that the mountain is planning to limit capacity and even season pass holders might have to reserve days ahead of time.

Thanks. We are ok doing the test before we come, but not long after I posted that comment my wife got an email from Ski Santa Fe that pass sales were on hold.

I think we will have to bite the bullet and buy season passes (or at least 5-7 day passes) in CO if we want to ski over the holidays. I think we will be able to find a place in Frisco and just deal with the drive.
