Biden sure put up a fight, good for him.

I loved dear leader’s response to the white supremacist/militia question (as if we had any doubt).

Biden was far too soft and I don’t understand it. Analysts are saying some undecided voters may have been put off by him saying “would you shut up, man?”. Who the heck would be put off by that _and then go vote Trump_?

Biden legit needs to ram that soundbite down everyone’s throat every single day until the election.

Trump was given several chances to give the correct answer and instead he just blew a Proud Boy dog whistle. It's not like he even fell into a trap, the bloody moderator was trying to hand him a life preserver!

That was AWESOME! My favorite part was when all three 70 year olds were yelling what they wanted to say at the same exact time, with no regard for really anything else.

Key takeaways from each :

Chris Wallace will be retiring soon. He’s clearly had enough of this shit.

Biden is a weenie. I have no idea how he got there, because he is a terrible candidate and will make an even worse president.

There’s an adage that applies to debating Trump - “Don’t wrassle with a pig in shit. You’re gonna lose, and the pig will enjoy it”.

I thought Biden did an excellent job staying out of it since the first 40 minutes or so were clearly engineered to get him into it. Wasn’t perfect but did a good job staying on message, not getting distracted, and not looking like he would roll over and just  take shit either.

I got home from symphony (we recorded a great show with Asleep at the Wheel) and sat in the kitchen with my headphones on while my son watched it. I support his watching it wholeheartedly, but I knew I would just want to throw the TV out the window after about five minutes. As I said to jminer on another thread, it’s nothing more than political theater of the absurd. It’s not a debate.

Trump is incapable of giving another person a chance to speak, he always brings it back to his ego. Wherever he is look at his posture and face when he is waiting for someone to stop talking, he can’t stand it. When he invites people to talk at the WH etc.. he looks like he’ s going to go nuts, juts his chin out to the side and looks like a little kid about to have a tantrum. Biden is prepared for everything so you can just expect his canned answer, I don’t love him but I’ll take it after this shit show.

Personally, I think Biden barely showed up. I can’t think of a single good point that he made. I was also disappointed that he didn’t have many good gaffs outside of “Of the 200,000 people that died under his watch, how many of them survived?”.

He also took to name calling when he got frustrated and somehow got caught off-guard by the question about Hunter. Not to mention how damn awkward it was that when faced with a question about Hunter, he started to talk about the dead son that was clearly his favorite. Yikes.

Wallace asked him to denounce white nationalists and he circled around to Antifa. Weirdly, within about 20 minutes, the campaign had ads running on Facebook that said “Trump denounced KKK and Antifa.”

I won’t be voting for him, but I can understand someone thinking that he’s a better choice for lots of economic or policy reasons. Compared to the previous administration , we’ve drawn down our military conflicts. And taking away the worst pandemic in modern history, things would be a stellar financial place.

In my line of work we talk about “giving [someone] the rope” - meaning, “I won’t try to hang you for this, but I’ll give you the rope and hope you hang yourself.” If a large part of what Biden is running on is having the temperament to be president, ultimately he doesn’t need to score points conventionally, he just has to give Trump enough of the stage to let him hang himself.

I do think there were segments Biden did well. Race and climate change I thought Trump got hammered. I thought Biden stuck to the questions too much on COVID to really give Trump a sizable battering which was obviously a missed opportunity . I thought he also scored well on the economy and trade (though there were some statements on trade that weren’t entirely accurate.) He was well prepared. To Trumps credit, he actually was pretty well prepared as well, but all that got lost in his arguments with Wallace and constant interrupting. And scoring a debate like it’s for a high school club assumes both people are there to win by scoring points, and you should have known before this started that wasn’t going to happen. If that’s the metric you want to use, no, Biden did not score many points (not am I sure he should be expected to while constantly being spoken over) . But neither did Trump, so it would probably be a final score of like 3-1 or so.

As for missteps, if you’re picking at Biden for name calling one time please don’t pretend that’s unbiased compared to the shit Trump did on stage and for the past 4 years. He missed a shift going from the son he was talking about to the one Trump was talking about, but I think he recovered well and had a good moment of honesty with people by saying his family has coped with addiction just like everyone else.

Overall I have to imagine Biden’s camp is very happy and isn’t looking to change much for the next one. I think they’re going to push him to speak generally while he’s being spoken over and attempt to land some blows while Trump is quiet. I would think Trumps camp is somewhat happy too, he obviously needs to dial it back but overall he walked away from three massive  issues mainly unscathed - his tax returns, the Supreme Court vacancy, and COVID.

Good points from my paying 1/2 to 2/3 attention:

“Here’s what’s before the Supreme Court right now and why we should wait to appoint a new justice...”

Trump’s been saying for 4 years he’s going to repeal and replace Obamacare, but he hasn’t done shit because he has no healthcare plan, here’s mine.

“You are the worst president in the history of our country.”

That’s pretty much exactly Trumps claim.

But I’m seeing Biden as someone who is willing to consider other views and adjust his plans accordingly. Some are going to claim that he doesn’t have a backbone, but I think it’s pretty damn refreshing for a politician to actually listen to other people .

IMO, the only reason one would choose him is desire for a strongman (although I suspect Barron could kick his ass) linked to sticking it to the libs, or fear of change, which is something that plagues much of the country (45 played into it well with the threat of “socialism”, which I’ll wager he, along with most Americans, couldn’t define if their lives depended on it). Really, as I’ve seen elsewhere, I think many choose him because he’s an avatar for their fantasies - born rich never-had-a-real-job circus showman who pretends he built an empire and is also a serial adulterer who plays with porn stars, eventually marries a plastic robot, and can get away with anything. It’s the boomer/xoomer fantasy. Shows the mettle of religious fundies who continue to go along with it, too.

I am not sure any economic or foreign policy under this regime is special, or is working. The prior regime, greatly flawed, performed the heavy lifting for both.  A pause in armed conflict isn’t world peace, although nepotism recipient Jared may believe otherwise.  The 2017 tax plan is more deficit-creating trickle down fantasy that is somehow allowed to exist as economic mobility continues to falter, and income/wealth chasms expand just as they have in the past 40 years. Americans usually don’t grasp that stock markets are not ‘the economy’, And to top it off, the US is still a laughingstock when it comes to healthcare coverage and anything linked to a safety net. If the regime gave a damn, there’d be more pandemic-related stimulus, like in actual first world locations.

Stand back and stand by.

I disagree. Just seeing someone tell Trump to shut up was pretty refreshing. Granted, It’s a long time before we’d reach “clear air” (to stretch that metaphor) , but for now, it was enough for me just to see a politician treating Trump like the bully he was.

What’s the deal with the $3.5M from Moscow? “My son has a drug problem.”

Did he answer the question or not? Because either he avoided the question or just said that his son’s drug habit has him tied to Russia.

Someone inherited the cleanup of the Bush bubble bursting. But even then, many economic factors in the US are nothing to brag about. Maybe not much winning going on, unless one is a 1%er or a proud boys type.

There’s a lot more to the economy than unemployment , especially as the US leads the developed world in non-living wage low-to-no benefits jobs, and has a threadbare safety net (and has an economy faltering now via lack of stimulus, while legitimately developed nations putting more of a share of GDP into recovery efforts are faring better in numerous ways).

One could also explain it as the Obama regime mongered some war (Dems are certainly not against that, and inheriting a situation from a war criminal like Cheney and co. doesn’t help ), and maybe finished some business so the replacement had less work to do. Or maybe Putin just doesn’t want the US nosing in, and someone indebted to him does what he’s told.
