It’s F A L L , Oppo. My favorite season! Mostly because when it turns to Fall around around here you get that beautiful autumnal breeze that signals the change of the seasons and some nice cool weather. It was still hot, but refreshingly breezy and nice. I just had to lay on a hammock for a while.

Kinja'd!!!

And I sat on a rooftop terrace with a great view across campus while sketching a building for a class.

Kinja'd!!!

We have to do these weekly free sketches for some reason and I found this view to be interesting.

Just remember that Big Brother is always watching.

How have y’all been?

It’s a shitty rainy day

Yesterday was absolute perfection. It was about 65 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. No smoke either which was nice. Today I have to work so it’s anything but perfect.

It’s rare to have a beautiful day and have the ability to truly enjoy it. I managed to get out for about 2 hours with only some light enjoyable work outside so that counts in my book. Wish I could go on a long ramble today but that’s not in the cards.

Glad you’re getting to be outside.

I’m stuck in my office making dumb, minuscule changes to a plat for the state, that, because of their new rules for label size , will actually be much less legible... Bu reau cracy, man.

But off Weds-Thursday to go get my new ride!

I’m not free from drudge work but at least I got to spend some substantial time outside. It really is absolutely divine weather. Painstakingly making something worse doesn’t sound very satisfying at all.

If you didn’t read that story I posted yesterday, there is a scene where a judge refuses to read someone’s legal documents because their branding demands their name always be printed in 1000 pt font so each time they mention their name they can only fit one letter on a page. Reminds me of that.

Oh, have you not actually taken delivery of your ‘Stralia hoonage machine? Shoulda bought a ute, mate.

I was actually referring to the Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles (he completes a 1000 yard+ pass to himself via a technicality) but really anything by Job Bois is sure to be brilliant.

Football 17776 just gets better actually. I read it in one sitting over the weekend and that was the highlight of the whole week.

We’re so close to getting these here. I’d settle for an ordinary ute actually but I would just love a real ute.

Kinja'd!!!

And you actually can legally import something like right now. Mmmmm.

Kinja'd!!!

I feel like owning a Holden or Ford ute in the US is a great blend of being very different without the parts counter pain that usually goes with it.

This is why I love winter in Socal. Never gets cold, maybe a little chilly at night on occasion. But during the day is absolutely perfect every day for months on end. It’s really like “ fall” every day. Ocean isn’t really any colder either since it’s always cold. The best part is though nobody is around because it ain’t summer.

Typical fall time period (sep-oct) is just summer 2.0 here which is kinda shitty. But that's okay #socalwinterstruggles will always make up for it.

I actually want a noticeable change in the seasons. It makes getting to the end of another year more of an accomplishment and really helps place you where in the seasonal cycle you are. I don’t want a harsh winter (meaning over an inch of snow in a year haha) but I’ll gladly put up with some unpleasantness for the variety.

I enjoy fall. Reminds me the most of back home with 4 distinct seasons. Denver doesn’t really get a winter and spring is amazing for 1 whole week. Weirdly goes from cold to hot in a week interval.

Was just out yesterday in jeans and a t-shirt. Just cool enough to not be hot while working and warm enough that just moving around kept you warm.

Then had a roaring fire in the fireplace last night.

Time for a bourbon and another fire.

That’s the spirit! Hehe, pun.

I think Georgia gets a much smoother transition between cold and hot with a whole lot of flip flopping as the weather changes its mind about what season it wants to be. I’ve been in jeans and a T shirt most of this week but today I broke out the shorts.

Fall weather has been nice, it cooled down a lot early September but we’re getting some warmer weather again before it cools back down later this week.

I love summer for the fact that days are long but fall is perfect in terms of weather. It’ll only be a matter of time now before I have to break out the winter coats, boots, and wheels for the car.

I just finished reading Football 17776. It’s like MST3K if it was just the robots and they’re voluntarily watching absurd football because there’s nothinng better to do, plus a healthy dose of existentialism and commentary on human nature. Like, daaaaang. That was both one of the most bizarre and fascinating sci-fi stories I’ve ever read...

This is a double whammy right here. So not only did you take my suggestion and watch MST3K apparently (how did you like it?) but that’s a great comparison I never quite realized.

But Nine is more like Joel whereas 10 is like Tom Servo and Juice is like Crow. And that makes all of humanity the bad movie hahahahaha that’s just such a perfect comparison! Well, Game 27 is as bad as any Monster A Go Go (my personal contender for the worst movie ever made) if not worse. You always wonder how people can make up something so utterly bizarre yet brilliant in an unexpected sort of way.

It’s just such a cerebral experience. It’s kind of a weighty commentary on the meaning of life at its core but the surface is delightfully eclectic.

And if you enjoyed that, the Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles (same author, Jon Bois) is more like the perspective of someone in one of those cross country football games. It’s a little longer too I think.

Yeah, I watched the Giant Gila Monster MST3K episode. I found it very interesting, as I ’d seen the film before and enjoyed their commentary on it :)

Even though Football 17776 was already pretty long, I definitely felt like I could’ve kept reading it even longer. I’d love to someday see a sequel where the probes finish recharging and talk about even more crazy variations of football. Plus, even though they discussed several topics at length, Nine still didn’t get all  his/her/it’s questions answered. Like, what are other countries doing? What about other sports? There’s so much story potential in this fictional universe!

Really, you had just happened to watch the movie at random? Why? I mean I also watched Birdemic: Shock and Terror on its own so I guess so. The MST3K episodes “The Pumaman” and “Fugitive Alien” are also some really good ones.

Same here. There’s so much possibility here. Especially as they only really looked at one country and one sport. I wonder what Football/Soccer looks like in the future. What about marathons with their seemingly enhancers strength? How many other space proves are sentient? What about supercomputers and coffee machines?

There’s so much to think about!

Yeah fuck actual winter, that we can definitely agree on! As much as I love skiing I never want to live somewhere that drops below freezing, ever even at night. I used to think seasons were cool and all but man is no rain for 8+ months convenient.

I mean they at one point referred to the Hubble space telescope as a “He”, and it seemed like at one point another character speaking in faint blue text jumped in the conversation just to say “congratulations” ... So who knows? I’d definitely love to see what other probes would have to contribute to the conversation. Especially if we could get some mars rover action in there... That’d be great. Also, Nine kinda reminds me of Arthur Dent from Hitchhikers’ Guide To The Galaxy in the way he reacts to being thrust into a new and very strange life, and the way he had trouble coming to grips with how the world works... Have you ever read that book series? If not, you should, i t’s great.

And yeah, I watched The Giant Gila Monster before the MST3K episode... I was looking for free entertainment and started exploring the wonderful world of public domain movies! Most are kinda cheesy but there are a few gems among them.

As annoying as rain can be when it gets real heavy there are some types of rain I like. Es pecially when you wake up to a pleasant cleansing rain from overnight or a sort of hot summer rain with big drops that comes and goes. Visibility unpairing sheets of rain can go.

I’ll still take seasons if you’ve got them.

You’ve read Hitchhikers too! I feel like the more I find out about you the more we have in common. Same ageish and freshman year in college , penchant for unusual and overlooked c ars across a diverse range o f categories, same sorta humo r from what I can tell, both Christians, and more. I’d love to meet you one day.

The Arthur Dent comparison is spot on too. I’m not really sure if Juice is a Ford Prefect (which would make Ten Trillai n and hmmmm) but it’s close. He just sort of reacts to the world around him as a passive observer while not entirely understanding anything. I’d already compared Bois and Douglas Adams’ writing in my head and thought they shared quite a bit. I quoted Adams as my senior quote.

What about the Soviet probes? The way of life that birthed them no longer exists. What do they think? Do they only watch Russian Bear wrestling in massive gladiator style arenas? What do they think about the perfect communist paradise that actually exists in the world in the novel?

Juice is actually European (explains a lot hehe) yet he mostly watches US Football. That’s kinda strange now that I think about it.

Oh yeah, and the ro vers! That could be hilarious! I would l vo e to see more of that world from a different perspective.

The Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles is honestly pretty close to what the actual players would have experienced. You should read that.

Who knows, maybe we will meet one day after all this ‘Rona mess is over. And whatever else 2020 unleashes in the next few months. I have a bad feeling about November...

Definitely the Soviet probes could be hilarious. I’m also imagining some narrative where the mars rovers try to find each other, maybe try to wake up/fix Opportunity as well like Ten and Juice did with Nine... Or maybe something with the abandoned Venus probes that only worked for a few minutes before breaking down! And NASA’s planning on sending a balloon probe there soon anyways, so that’s another possibility, and I think they want to send a new rover to the moon as well and maybe if that gains sentience it could meet the rover the Russians sent there way back when and they could... NO! NO! BAD AWESOMEAUSTINV! Do NOT start writing Football 17776 fanfics!

But I do want to see more weird sports... Transatlantic water polo, perhaps? ;)

Also, Ten can’t be Trillian because that would mean eventually she goes to a sperm bank and has her and Nine’s daughter, but they’re sisters, and I can’t handle this.

November eh? At least I will only have a sense of foreboding for a month. I’d rather not, but at least it’s only a month.

Rover shenanigans hehe that would make for quite a story. I would love to read one where a Soviet rover and an American rover have to learn to get along after realizing humanity has solved all its problems but they haven’t. Perhaps they could bond over the sport of transatlantic Water Polo (with elements of Waterworld  of course where you have boat powerups you can use but some are really uselessly like you get an old fashioned sailing pirate ship for a week)

Well you really went there and I tried not too. I didn’t say they were exact but the personalities were similar enough. Bleh, you really did go there.

Kinja'd!!! Jim Spanfeller > Who is the Leader - 404 / Blog No Longer Available
09/29/2020 at 12:15

Kinja'd!!!0

I might argue that personality-wise, Ten is more similar to Ford Prefect and JUICE is Zaphod...

Perhaps the Mars rovers could develop their own, very slow versions of Football to play . Th ey could use a rock as the ball, with that rock being from a different part of the planet than where the game is played so their sensors can tell it apart from all the others. They can use the old Viking lander as the Referee! With 5 rovers up there (once Perseverance lands) plus one drone, that’s six things that could gain sentience for three players per team... Heck, maybe in the world of Football 17776 they ARE already doing just that and haven’t contacted the other probes yet because they’re perfectly content to just play Mars Football together...

Kinja'd!!!1

Hmmm, I’m not convinced Juice is quite crazy enough to be a Zaphod but there’s elements of his personality there. Good point. Kind of a Ford-Zaphod hybrid as I don’t think Ten is quite a full Ford.

Haha, yeah, a really slow paced game of Mars rover football. Maybe they are aware of the space probes and have been plotting the perfect first-contact prank for thousands of years except they can’t agree on an execution. I love how much speculation the story leaves as to the other things going on.
