The control arm bolt fell out while driving. This is a brand new part just installed by the mechanic a few weeks ago. Luckily very close to GF’s grandparents so I’m in their driveway now trying to fix it. Thankfully my GF has eagle eyes and found the bolt off the side of the road. Not how i wanted this evening to go at all.

No thread lock I guess. I forgot to put some on one side of my front sway bar. Well it came loose and I did not know what the hell was making the sound, I heard the bolt come off and ping off the bottom of the car.

Glad you found out about it though as that could have been bad.

Toolz. I’m developing a hankering to purchase a compound mitre saw to that I can chop wider material. I am currently using a 10-inch DeWalt chop saw that works great that I’ve been using for many years. I’d probably continue to use it by taking it along when I do projects away from the house. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding such a purchase?

Interesting, similar construction to my SAAB as I replaced that bushing (aka the whole stanchion arms) on mine. Except on the SAAB that’s a captive nut inside a box section.
Torque was pretty high, like 85+half turn.

There are a lot of great saws out there, if you’re buying new. I really dig the Bosch dual arm saw that doesn’t take up so much space, but they’re very spendy. Hitachi and Festool both make great saws too, but again they’re pricey. Especially the Festool. On a more budget end, whatever DeWalt’s current saw is, is probably plenty good. They usually go on sale after Thanksgiving. I would recommend stepping up to a 12". If you’re going to make a move, go all the way.
Now, if you’re willing to hunt for a good used one, and knowing what I know about you, you are, keep your eyes peeled for a DeWalt DW708. That was the first really good double bevel sliding compound saw. When it came out, everything that came before it was instantly obsolete. Since, then, the saws have been refined, and some have more whiz-bang features, but the DW708 is an extremely solid, extremely capable saw. I bought this one used like 15 years ago, and I don’t see myself ever getting rid of it.
It’s only real flaw, is it’s very top heavy. It has to be mounted to a bench, or it’ll topple over if you’re not careful.

Thanks for that reply. I will use this saw as a comparison point. I’d never heard of Festool before today. The saw you’ve photographed must be well over twenty years old and unless I could find a pristine specimen, I might be reluctant to buy something that old. How long, or wide, is the cut on that saw? Also, as long as I knew I could make a 12-inch cut, for the sake of space and cost, I might feel inclined to stick with a 10-incher.
Your account of hybrid teaching I copied and pasted — and did some select NSFW language editing — and sent it around to my faculty, union president, superintendent and his C-level directors, and several of my family. I even wound up on a phone call with the supt yesterday afternoon discussing this and other matters. It was a great account and I really appreciate you taking the time to type it up. One bit you said later, that I wish I could have included, was that Indiana doesn’t mandate motorcycle helmets by law.

I went with a 10" at school, because it was easier to handle for the kids, I regret it. The 12" will be worth it. They made the 708 for a long time, so if you find a well kept one, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it personally. Honestly any of the newer DeWalts are good, and cheaper than the other good brands .
If my account can help keep your district from descending into this madness, it was time well spent. Honestly just venting it was helpful.
I find it funny that you have a weird mental block on where I live. You’ve mailed me things in Illinois :)
I don’t think Indiana has a helmet law either though. I know Wisconsin doesn’t.

Festool is nice. All the tools hook up to their shop vac system making them virtually dust free (the chop saw is tough to make dust free but it helps). They also were among the first to use stacking storage box systems which are nice for contractors, I suppose . If you want a really versatile saw, they also make a track saw that is to die for. The routers are silly nice and the sanders are pretty amazing too.
Before the Festool miter saw like that one above , my father - a pro carpenter - had a 12" Hitachi dual bevel miter at both his house and his work. I think they have rebranded as Metabo, but they are also nice tools. I have a hang up about Dewalt, but it just has to do with past quality that I thought lacked. I have used a Dewalt chop saw though and it was fine. Probably cut a zillion board feet of decking with one.

My DeWalt has hung in there for like 15 years. But it’s just a 10-inch chop...
I think a Bosch or DeWalt or other brand would be like half the cost of the Festool and as an albeit serious ama teur, I really can’t justify the extra cost.

If I came into a ton of money, and was to buy all new stuff, I’d probably go whole-hog on all the Festool stuff. I’m way too cheap for that though . You can get 95% of the way there, for half the price, with other good mainstream brands (DeWalt, Bosch, Milwaukee, etc).
Some of the original DeWalt stuff, from the early 90's, was quite crappy. I had the original DeWalt 8-1/4" sliding compound miter saw, from roughly 1990, that I inherited from my uncle. It was a complete pile of shit. The 0° stop was 1/2° off, and non-adjustable. When you used a bevel angle, you had to be careful not to put the saw down all the way, or you’d start cutting into the frame itself.
Black and Decker invested a ton of money into DeWalt in the mid -late 90's. Since then, they’ve been really good. They’re rarely the best at anything, but they’re always very good. I will say though, when the DW708 sliding compound miter saw came out in the late 90's, every other miter saw on the market became obsolete overnight. It also was the death-blow to radial arm saws.
I’m not a brand loyal guy, believe it or not. I own or have owned tools from almost all the major brands.

It’s complicated.
In essence, I’ve decided that buying another vehicle that rides/drives just like my LJ, while appealing and still something I may do someday, isn’t the right choice today.
So, I’m probably going with an Overland WJ. Top of the line of that generation, very robust 4wd system, Rolls Royce luxury compared to what I have to deal with in mine.
That way I can choose what comfort level I want for any given excursion, and it’s still plenty capable for things like a Jeep Jamboree, especially if I buy one with a lift or add a lift later.
This all came to a head yesterday at the end of my day driving in southern Indiana when I realized just how exhausted I was, and how much of that was due just to driving the LJ.
And maybe I’ll ship the LJ off to a specialist next year to have it really beefed up. Fix the transmission, lockers, wiring, get it back into salable/excursion-worthy shape.

For $600 I’m thinking it’s very tempting to buy it just to have spare parts, or I may get it towed to a shop near there and have them try to fix it.
Heck, the tires alone should be worth that.

With battery stuff it’s different, for sure. My big cordless stuff is a DeWalt, because I got a killer deal on their top of the line brushless hammer drill, and built my set from there. For little stuff I have a set of Milwaukee 12V tools. I’m very happy with both sets. When people ask me for advice on cordless tools , I tell them to buy Milwaukee or DeWalt, whichever one they either like better, or get a better deal on. You’re not going to go wrong either way.
I still have lots of corded tools, I like having 120 volts for a lot of things, and that's a total mishmash of brands.

That’s the exact reason I went with Milwaukee! Had a Bosch drill and impact and when the drill gave up I looked at reviews, which basically said they are all very similar, and so I went with what was on sale. I’ve been very happy with them, but would likely be happy with any higher-tier tool manufacturer.
I don’t do much woodworking at all, but there is certainly a benefit to corded tools in that application. I love doing things in my dad’s garage. It’s a small space, but everything is well thought out, easy to use and also high quality. I gotta say, we used his track saw to cut a bunch of plywood sheathing once, and it was one of those tools that at the end of the day I was thinking I should buy one. Just a cool, easy to use system that is pretty well foolproof. Certainly a skill saw is very similar, but this just makes it so much easier.

When I first made the move from an old NiCAD cordless to a brushless lithium ion setup, I went with Makita. While the impact driver was fantastic, the drill was totally gutless and the chuck was a piece of junk. It totally soured me on Makita.
I would love to get a track saw. If I didn’t have access to my school workshop, I certainly would have bought one already. They’re super cool.

I had a top of the line Dewalt that I bought at Home Depot. It was a lot of money at the time and I needed a drill for work. From the first time I used it the chuck wobbled. I tried two others and both wobbled so I ended up with a cheap model without the bells and whistles, but with a straight chuck. It lasted a long time even after falling in salt water. It just left a bad taste so I have avoided them.

It’s funny, my dad had a bad experience with Bosch and sw ore off their cordless tools and then switched to Hitachi . His work apparently tested all the major brands and the Hitachi held up the best so that’s what he went with. A few weeks ago he dropped his drill off a roof and replaced it with a set from Metabo (after they bought Hitachi) because they still us the same batteries. He does still love his Bosch worm drive framing saw though.

I have a 12V Bosch set as well, that’s pretty nice. I also have a couple of Bosch cordless drills at school that I don’t love. To be fair though, they’re very old.
I bought some Hitachi stuff at my previous school district. The cordless drills held up pretty well. The scroll saws, not so much. My personal random orbit sander is a Hitachi. It's ok, but I wouldn't buy it again. The switch requires two hands to turn on, and the dust bag fell apart.
