"If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent" (essextee)

It’s possibly one of the best works of fiction I have ever encountered, and I’m not even interested in football. It is a story of humanity from the perspective of space probes that have gained sentience and been watching us for millenni a. It’s presented as a mostly text multimedia experience, with illustrations and videos interspersed throughout. It’s about a 2hr read and I guarantee you’ll end up wanting to do it in one sitting.

Jon Bois is a goddamn national treasure, deserving of a MacArthur grant, in my opinion.
Pretty much everything he’s ever made is just straight-up amazing. If you haven’t seen his series Pretty Good, or Breaking Madden, or Chart Party... Well, you’re in for a long, great ride.
I, too, care nothing for sports. But I will read/watch/listen to/be amazed by every single thing he publishes.

This is absolutely amazing. It’s un like anything I’ve ever read before. I’m only a little ways into where the football actually starts.
Only 6 years to go apparently until 2026.

This looks like a trip! I’m also in the “give no fucks about football” camp, and i t sucked me in quick , but I’ll have to come back to finish it later today ( after I replace a dead window regulator).

Holy crap that was the best fiction I’ve read all year . Really sucked me in and brought a tear to my eye multiple times. How you can perfectly encapsulate a human experience different than our own yet startlingly similar through that beautifully eclectic multi media approach I don't know. I can't recommend that enough.

It's almost transcendental. Like, I want all media to be in this form from now on.

I like that you held off on commenting on my first comment because you knew I’d be back when I finished. It’s just that good.
I want to look into some of the other stuff the author has done.
The multimedia experience here is just so incredible. Like the part where you realize the text goes off where the screen should end and you follow it up and over and back down. And they even comment on the readability.
Though they also mention that people are tuning in to their communications and never mentioned it again. And why did they wait so long to wake Nine up? There are so many questions left unanswered and that’s its brilliance. I’ll be turning it over in my mind for days.
BTW watched Interstellar for the first time last night/this morning and that is one FANTASTIC pairing of first time fiction.

I never thought I would be so emotional over a light bulb.
I would imagine it was because Nine was the oldest/simplest amd needed more time to be ready for it.

I’ll reiterate: Jon Bois deserves a MacArthur. He’s very literally brilliant.

Upon your recommendation, I read it and I’d say it’s clever, but I am not as deeply moved by it as you apparently were.

Well I have also had a profoundly terrible week and have read very little this year. It was the bright spot in a rather dism al week and dare I say it weekend so if course I'm going to perhaps have a higher opinion if it than otherwise. I still think it was brilliant. I think most of that can be chocked up to different readers too.

It was clever and I enjoyed it and I’d not have read it but for your recommendation.
