Hey let’s run this high strung coal roller on the dyno with a bunch of people standing around. What could go wrong?

Were every diesel pickup in the world to do that tomorrow (with no one in them obvs) I wouldn’t shed a tear.

Just checked, seems like there are now only inline 4 diesels in pickups available here (even on the new Ranger Raptor that doesn’t get the inline 5 anymore) as the Amarok and the Mercedes that had V 6 diesels have been  discontinued (the Amarok is still sold on other markets) .

Not sure they could easily blow that big :)

Counter-Point— I tow my rally cars and supplies a lot in several trailers. I recently bought my first Duramax... and discovered I should have bought a big diesel years ago.

Mine passes CA emissions and has full DEF intact.  Not everybody’s rolling coal.

Baby Duramax is a 6 cylinder in North America. 3.0

I know they’re useful, it’s just that around here one of their primary uses is annoying everyone within earshot.

Funny thing, if i search for Duramax on Google, the first page and a half are about that kind of Duramax .

Here the Ranger only comes with a 2.0 diesel in 130hp, 170hp or 213hp, all available in manual and only the two most powerful in auto.

The Raptor only comes with the auto and the 213hp engine and is given for 10.2sec for the 0-100kph.

And because it’s at 277 g/km of CO2 on the WLTP test, it has a 20k€ malus (the maximum) .

In fairness, I have no idea how good the 6 cylinder is— even though I’d like to put one in one of my Land Cruisers.

OTOH, that V8 6.6L is a monster.

I had a stock LMM, and I’d buy another big diesel for when I get to the point of hauling toys . I genuinely liked that pickup even when it wasn’t on tow/haul.

I’d buy a new d iesel HD over something like a new Merc E-Class.

The E400d is available here which is a brand new 3.0 inline 6 diesel and it’s even available on the estate version.

It’s not so much the powertrain as it is the platform. I used to be like Shilling until I had to work in the backcountry with snow on the ground for 5mo of the year, fast 2 lane undivided with poor condition roads, lots of FSR and gravel roads, and a good chance of deer and elk possibly being on the road. Also you needed to haul or tow equipment to have fun. Over half the vehicles in the city were full size pickups (and they dominated even the fullsize SUV 4:1). There was no Merc dealership (the only euro dealer was VW).

Jalop has this hate on full size pickups with Shilling heading it but that’s because they (and most of the commentate) have never lived with a large pick-up (and probably never will or need to), so it’s an echo chamber of ignorance that gets drummed up based on “their” values. I liken these new pickups to the land yachts from 60-80's except the capabilities when you need to do something are staggering.

The problem about pickups is mainly that it has became mainstream in the US, most peoples use them as a commuter when it’s definitely not the right tool for the job and that CAFE has different rules for pickups than for the rest of the cars while buyers don’t have a different set of rules/taxes to buy/use them .
