In January I posted about my dilemma of having to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. My 2D and 3D software won’t run on 10. This just won’t do
.
I decided to run both by installing 7 on my old Samsung 840 EVO (offline), and installing it again then upgrading for free to Windows 10 on an old Corsair SSD. Have I mentioned Scottish heritage? Things didn’t go smoothly or as planned.
With the ordeal below I decided to buy a copy of Windows 10 and thankful I did. The d
ry-
run process was
excruciating.
I discovered the Corsair SSD wasn’t SATA3, so I bought a Samsung 860 EVO only to discover my old version of Samsung Magician was, well, too old and wouldn’t allow me to run RAPID Mode. The new version also wouldn’t let me run RAPID Mode due to a compatibility problem with the Marvell Driver for my 11 year old motherboard. I was lucky to get that driver at all as t here’ s only one release that works with Windows 10 . In the end I bought a second used Samsung 840 EVO on ebay for $50 and waited the month for it to arrive.
I also learned when they say, “Windows 7 is no longer supported”, they don’t mean there will be no more updates released. They mean there are no updates, past, present or future. I had to find the Service Pack myself and install it manually. Everything else with drivers went lickety-split as downloaded
them 11 years ago. That drive is a time capsule.
Out of nowhere one of my Quadro 4000s shit the bed. The fan went to 100% and there was no video signal. This ended up being a blessing as I’ve always hated running a Quadro 4000 as my main video card. With a 30" monitor it would idle at 55° and under load would hit 90°. That was never a good card. Luckily, I found a new old stock 5000 locally for $150. I’m now running a 5000 and a 4000. I’ve reapplied thermal paste to the dead 4000 an threw it in a closet untested. If I ever need it, it might work.
While I was at it, I thought it a good idea to re-apply thermal paste to my processor too. It was idling at about 45°.

I’m unsure why the drastic differences in SSD speeds from one OS to another. I’m thinking it may have something to do with having a 24gb scratch disk on W7 and a 4gb on W10 as RAPID uses RAM. Happy anyway.

I’m absolutely over the moon with how well the monitor calibrated with my old Spyder3 and a copy of DisplayCAL. A E average of 0.07 and a maximum of 1.12 is phenomenal. Anything under 1.0
for an average
is good enough for pretty much anything. That maximum is also extremely good. I now shoot RAW (sometimes).

Not bad for an 11 year old computer. Both drives are
now cloned and I’m once again
ready to rock.

Windows 10: $100
Samsung 860 EVO: $80 (now used for storage)
SSD Switch: $40
Used Samsung 840 EVO: $50
Quadro 5000: $150
I didn’t want to spend
any
money, but $420
isn’t the end of the world. I have my graphics software and I can surf the web.
Here’s hoping for many more years of gifs for Oppo.

That’s a lot of work to get win7 working, well done. I’m building a file server from scrounged parts to replace my old system and finally get off win7. Not that I disliked it, it was a solid OS but it’s time.
What drive is this?

That’s a 120gb 840 EVO (Windows 7). OMG, yes a lot of work, but necessary :-)x. I now have quite a few scrounged spare parts too. Close to complete PC.

There’s something fishy going on with your Crystaldisk mark speeds shown . This is what a typical 120g 840 evo will do over sata3 .
The sata 3 bus maxes out at 6gb/s which is a theoretical 60 0MB/s but lower with overhead.

It’s the RAPID Mode. It uses RAM to cache. In this configuration they usually top at around 3000 MB/s. I don’t know why it’s at 4700 MB/s but I ain’t askin’. :-)x

The RAPID is a terrible idea, it seems to be doing write cache using the computer RAM at the driver level which is a recipe for dis aster even if you have the computer plugged to an APC, if there is a bug on Windows or in the driver or an issue with your RAM or simply a crash or power cut at the wrong time you can loose all your datas .
If you have plenty of RAM to use for caching you could also try to customize how much memory Windows leverage for it’s own filesystem cache (which is only for reads).

I don’t know about a terrible idea. Everything’s backed up and cloned. I can be up and running again in 1/2 an hour.
I left Windows 10 memory where it wants to be, but I did change Windows 7 with the graphics software to 24gb.

Yeah, I wouldn’t (and don’t) use RAPID. Modern Windows and Linux will use spare RAM for read caching out of the box anyway, and you really don’t want to use volatile RAM for write caching without a tightly integrated battery (or in very specific circumstances where you know can afford to lose anything written to it).

And i forgot to mention that the 840 Evo are terrible when they start to be at the end of their life, especially if they still have the buggy firmware had hundreds of them on servers at work and after a few years (not always a big usage) some were slower than hard disks even if they had clean SMART counters, some were making the system crash and/or unable to reboot ; i used to have mulitple of those used ones on my own computer (i have 8 SSDs on it) and i had to bin at least 4 or 5 in less than a year with multiple occurence of them freezing my computer at boot or randomly and now run seven 850 Evo (also used) and one SM871 (which is an OEM 850 Evo) and haven’t had issues so far.
Do you really need the extra performance?

Why not run Windows 7 in a VM?
Also, Amazon is selling a 250GB SSD for $25:

What’s an SSD switch? An A/B switch to physically select boot drives?

I saw those when I searched amazon, but was looking for a SATA switch. .....but makes sense they can all be connected but only the powered one will boot/be active.
I have a few smaller SSD drives and think I have a new project now...thanks!

Yep, just a power switch. IIRC, there’s one on Amazon for around $10 and 2nd that looks to be exactly the same for $20. I ended up with the Kingwin for $30 plus tax and shipping. It’s fine.
It’s great to see people get value from Oppo! Now shitpost!
