This is going to do wonders for the wealth gap.

Honestly it’ll do fuckall. Go over to dieseldub’s post on the same legislation. It’s toothless.

Gotta just buy that 2034 toyota and make that baby last. Or the market for low mile out of state cars is going to go CRAZY.

The car dealers in Reno and Vegas will love it... of course, the number of CA residents holding NV citizenship already is at record levels. And, the I15 on Friday afternoon proves it.

This is purely aspirational. Will they cave in to logic when the time comes? Of course! But it’s good to set environmental goals instead of accepting the status quo and 15 years is a long ways from now. I also think that they will make loopholes for commercial vehicles and hybrid cars so the gas engine will still be around.
The f
li
p side is people will be gaining equity on their used cars since existing gas cars
will become more valued. P
eople will probably
need a second mortgage on their house
to afford
a
used
Tacoma.

I don’t see why this is a big deal actually, I’m sure most people will be buying a EV by then. Who knows how big the range will be . I’d feel better with a hybrid but if my condos had charging at our spaces I’d have no problem for normal use, I usually do about 35 miles on a normal work day, if I ever go back to that job I guess! I bet more EV conversion kits will be available soon, they already have the SBC size for older vehicles. A lot can change by then, this stuff is evolving rapidly.

Usually, it’s driven by politics.
Read up on the tortured history of MTBE + Ethanol in California.
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, does “unintended consequences” like CA...

Oh, I see that, but these moves almost always hurt lower-income people more...
Of course, here in SB, they went well over 40 years without approving any sort of multi-family housing... and then wondered why the housing affordability index went off the charts. Heh.

It seems to me much ado about nothing. It’s a grand proclamation, but I don’t see it actually coming to pass.

Do w e care about the wealth gap now?
![]() 09/24/2020 at 15:27 |

Yep, just political posturing.
I, by executive decree, hereby declare that all Californians will, beginning at some random point in the future,
use
only
2 squares of TP per wipe.

Oh, it’s difficult not to here. The homeless situation is pretty hard to ignore in SoCal... add some social unrest... some COVID stuff.
I’m not a SJW, but it’s pretty clear something’s fuckt up.

Gotta get those city folk on your side. Fuck those losers who live in the boonies, though.

Yup.
It’s posturing until the legislature passes it into law, but they probably value their political position and perks more than to do that (minus a few in the most liberal districts).

Good point- practically nobody is making an electric pickup truck currently.

Sounds like a dumb premise based on incorrect information.
The ban doesn’t affect used car sales AT ALL.
Read my blog on this topic for further explanation and historical precedent on the sales of non-CARB compliant vehicles in California as used cars.

The act of being in California seems to be a burden on people's wallets.

in other words Ca lifornia will be the to go place to sell used cars. And this will also inflate used car prices everywhere

I agree that it is politics and a lot of these policies are driven by “feeling good” or having “good intentions” without understanding the residual effects. Below is something that happened in my neck of the woods. The urban planners want to make Northampton into a European city but don’t understand that we don’t live in Europe. The took everything down last week.
As far a trying to regulate or spur more activities in alternative fuel vehicles, I’m on the side of more pressure to reduce our carbon footprint the better.

40+ years of bullshit policy coming home to roost (and I mean that on a national level, not just CA).
But maybe some more trickle down nonsense will solve it lolol.

How does this impact lower income people? I’m not seeing the connection here.
This rule doesn’t include used cars... And this likely applies both to importing used cars model year 2035 and newer into the state as well as buying and selling older cars from any origin. I assert the former based on historical precedent with non-CARB compliant cars from years past.
I’ve owned a total of 5 non-CARB compliant cars and successfully registered and passed smog with them as a California resident...

Would be great if they actually backed down from it, and setting that sort of a goal just to increase the amount of electric cars makes sense. But I’m not sure if I trust that any gov’t will actually do that, though.
![]() 09/24/2020 at 18:32 |

Yeah thats not what they need to be focusing on right now.

Oh there’s a whole bunch of completely regressive tax/cost implications.
Lower income tiers get smacked already with CA’s nutty high gas taxes. This move will drive up prices for used cars dramatically. Also regressive.
Rewiring cost of apartment buildings for chargers will be borne by tenants...
The list goes on and on.
