Kinja'd!!!

...and found out that she’s a kleptomaniac and treats wait staff and retail employees poorly? That’s how I’m feeling about MSFS 2020 right now. She’s beautiful to look at, but I’m finding that she’s a colossal PITA that is in need of a little polish and attitude adjustment.

Last week it was unplayable, and I couldn’t get through more than about 15 minutes of flying before it dumped me to the desktop. I was planning on reinstalling windows, making sure it was set for UEFI this time around, and did that over the weekend. That was a fustercluck in itself, but eventually I got it all working (thankfully the transfer software I reluctantly bought had 24/7 support).

After the new OS load and finally getting my drive letters put back the way they were (drive letters are soooooo archaic, especially when you’re a network admin and constantly run out...) I tried MSFS again and found that it wasn’t crashing any longer - woohoo! Of course, that doesn’t mean that it works correctly. I’ve heard about various bugs over the last few weeks but didn’t encounter many of them until recently. This week it’s been nothing but trouble. Brakes not working, autopilot not following simple flight plans and overstressing the aircraft, etc.

Tonight’s flight was an exercise in frustration. A very simple flight from SNA to VGT in the Caravan. First problem - autopilot won’t turn on. Fine - I can fly a few hundred miles by hand, but I shouldn’t have to. Then there were two engine flameouts enroute. I put the ATC window on the second monitor and it was sort of OK, but after coming back from a pause I had it turning on and off rapidly on the secondary monitor and stuck on the primary monitor, unable to be turned off. Oh, and this caused my framerate to drop to about 5-7 FPS when I normally get 45-55.

Then there was the radio - I had transmissions from both the tower and ATC simultaneously. Entering a waypoint on the G1000 was an exercise in frustration, although it was a lot easier sitting around on the ground instead of trying to make those precise mouse clicks whilst the ‘plane is bouncing around in flight. Exiting the flight and going back to the menu took at least 10 minutes - I didn’t actually watch it the whole time but started writing this whilst waiting. And every single time I went to the drone view whilst flying, the aircraft would pitch up and bank to the right even though it was perfectly trimmed.

At this point I’m tempted to break up with this bitch until she matures a little bit, and then I’ll give her a second chance. I still have X-Plane and Flight Sim World installed as well as FSX (of course) so I can still get some flight time in without the frustrations I’m encountering now.

My system is fully patched and MSFS is up-to-date. Outside of this one program it’s running better than ever, and will probably get even quicker once I do some cleanup and purge a few years worth of old programs that I’m not using. I’m afraid I’ll just have to break the bad news to her - it’s not me, it’s you...

Not really a gamer, but I have dated out of my league and found out they were awful people.  Super disappointing when you do find out, but cest la vie.

I’ve not experienced that amount of difficulty at all, biggest issue I have is the frustration around the G1000 and the fact that the recent patch seems to have reduced my framerates from usually 40 to usually 25. I always run it in “run as administrator” mode though since the live weather doesn’ t work otherwise for some reason.

It’s been fine for me ever since they patched the bug that makes it crash if , say, your wireless controller runs out of battery and disconnects

I only have a six or seven hours in so far (1 hour being the longest single flight) and haven’t really had any issues. One flight had some low FPS for bit, but admittedly I probably had eight other apps open in the backg ro und.

Then again, I just fly like a rookie that is sightseeing....no real piloting stuff like Autopilot or ATC.  I upgraded to an i7-9th Gen and the graphics are really impressive on High.  I still need to mess around a bit, but waiting for my yoke to arrive, hopefully before Thanksgiving.
