Door hinges all welded up and working great...
$40 set of wheels and tires mounted up (with spacers, shhh) and fitting fine (no rubbing!).
T iming belt (158k and original, but in GREAT shape) replaced and running perfect....
But now the damn alternator took a crap . Its BARELY charging the battery.
The first time I drove the car was after jump starting it, and I ran it with the bad battery in it, and the alternator ran everything just fine . A month later w hen I drove it home, I had put a new battery in it, and had no problems the whole way.
Before I took the doors off I moved it into my driveway and the battery (and brake) lights came on, but went off and stayed off with a little RPM.
Took it for a drive after putting the timing belt in, and the wheels/tires on and it only went off at VERY high RPM, then came back on.
Put my multi-meter to it and the battery is only getting 12.1 V at idle. Shit. Guess I’m putting an alternator in it too....

Well that’s going to be alot easier than that door fix at least.
Nice work.

I appreciate the effort that went into making the gifs. But I can’t stop looking at them because your facial hair appears to have disappeared between shots. It was subtle so it took me a while to realize what was bugging me about them.
I’m shocked the timing belt lasted that many years. Impressive. I’m really taking a liking to this crappy old Mitsubishi through your posts on it.

Was that engine sitting at the bottom of the ocean for a month.... looks very corroded, right?

Typical Wisconsin Rust.
(camera flash makes it look worse than it is)

I blame the compression of the gif file. My beard’s about the same length in both (taken a week apart)

I just hate spending money on this thing. I still have an exhaust to fix/replace, rear brakes to replace/adjust, fluids to change, headlights to polish/replace, and a hood to find that’s not $250 or more.

You can see that your beard appears to be either absent or inexplicably translucent gray in that gif right?
Good work on the gif though. It adds a lot of interest to the post. I also applaud all the effort that you have put into the little Mirage. Is your plan to sell it or keep it?

Watch out for the coolant pipe that runs behind the engine
, then. Mine rusted out
in Australia of all places
.

The lower half of his pants also disappeared.

And changed color. Or he was wearing them underneath and took the jeans off.

Time to find a salvage yard alternator to go with your black salvage yard hood and fender.....

Could you get a cheap alternator at a local pick-n-pull yard?

Yeah that’s what I get for using Giphy. I plan to drive it some days, but have it listed for sale or trade because I get bored easy and really need something with 4 doors.

I’ve contacted all 7 salvage yards on car-part that list a black hood online, only one has responded. No fender. Hood is $250 shipped. Eek.

WHat is the model and year of the car?

Any possibility of filling the hood rust holes with foam, shaving and then bondo- ing over the foam and then a cheap carbon fiber wrap of the hood?

no need for belt tensioner on that model. they never go wrong

2001 Mitsubishi Mirage. I could temporarily fix the hood if worse comes to worse. But in the interest of getting “top dollar” for the car, a nice rust free one would be a good investment.

The bearing didn’t sound TOO bad, so yeah it went right back in.

Yep Slim pickings around chicago and nothing in black . That’s a tough one as you will not get a lot for the car. So you hate to put a lot into non-functional parts.
