With the craziness that is the new M4's front end, together with the launch color being quite similar to mine, I thought I’d throw together some comparison shots. New or old?

100% the old one. Especially from the front. They lost their minds with that idiotic front end. The big problem is someone had to sign off on that. Probably a whole lot of someones... And it still got the signatures needed to head for actual production. What in the ever loving hell is going on over there?!

It’s as if they said “people only recognize the grille on BMWs, so let’s just make that bigger and to hell with everything else.”

The new one looks like a Genesis G70 had sex with a Mustang. The front end doesn’t even bother me as much as how the overall design just looks cheap. You could replace the BMW roundel with a Kia or Subaru badge and nobody would notice. They basically took the 8-series - which has pretty much the same problem of being way too bland and derivative for how expensive it is - and shrunk it down. The current one has bulges and creases in the right spots. It has a powerful stance without overusing gimmicks. You know it is special from a distance. You know it is special parked next to a 428i. Maybe the fenders on the new one will pop more in person than they do in these photos but overall it’s just leaving me with revived Hyundai Genesis Coupe vibe rather than $100k German muscle coupe.

This new grille style BMW is slapping on their cars make me think that they ran a focus group to gauge what their customers’ preferences, someone said he wanted a car to look like a beaver, and they took it to mean the rodent.

Ignoring the gaping maw for a second, I think your side-on shot best illustrates the problem(s) with BMW’s new styling direction, which is at its worst in their coupes (current 2 series being the singular holdout, for now). Previous BMW coupes, including the current M4, had complimenting lines and styling elements that flow and work together to create a cohesive design. None of the lines on the new cars match or parallel eachother; there are several design elements and contours with no apparent relation to others on the car; in short, it’s a disjointed mess. It looks like a Chinese copy of an M4 .

Apart from that abomination of a grill, I think the biggest flaw on this one (and the 8 series), it the upward sloping bottom of the rear side window, rather than having it continue the straight on from the door glass as had been a BMW design staple for 50 years. It makes the rear haunch, the area between the rear wheel arch look disproportionately huge, the greenhouse look small, the ass end look fat, and the whole thing look like a C ivic in the worst way possible - it ruins the long , obviously rwd proportions BMWs have always had.

As and aside, I believe the large, vertical kidneys could have been done well. T hese just aren’t - they look like they were a last minute addition to the design, rather than being the basis of it, as they should’ve been for it to work.

The back is the only acceptable angle of that new design but the taillights give off a Lexus vibe and not in a good way, they’re not terrible here but they don’t seem right.

I’d like to thank the BMW (and auto industry in general) for sparing me from wanting to spend real money on a car . The problem is that we’ll have to actually look at these abominations on the street soon. Blegh.

There's no debate in my mind. The new M4 looks like a concept version of a new Lexus RC. Enough new creases (what in God's name is going on with that rear bumper contour?) to make Lexus blush.

Grill aside, I like the new shape, especially the lack of the Hofmeister Kink.

But there is no getting around that grill, so yours is the clear winner in the looks department.

.....and pulled out, only to look down and see poo on his dipstick. The new BMW isn’t even a lovechild, it’s the sad realization there’s poop on your stuff after giving anal a try.

Poorly done photochop fixing the worst part:

Kinja'd!!!

There are only two parts where the new one is worse, the biggest glaring part is the front end. All they needed to do wa s continue the body color line across the beaver teeth.

Plus, the new one is..... lacking in the bulge. On the hood.
