Acura SLX Trooper Bighorn Horizon Jackaroo Monterey
So i was thinking about the SLX today, and I found that it was a rebadged Isuzu Trooper. Checking the Wiki, the 1991-2002 was marketed as:
Isuzu Trooper
Isuzu Bighorn
Acura SLX
Chevrolet Trooper
Holden Jacka roo
Holden Monterey
Honda Horizon
HSV Jackaroo
Opel Monterey
Subaru B ighorn
Vauxhall Monterey
That’s 8 major manufacturers and 6 different names. In today’s world, we have global platforms with regional names, but I can’t think of another platform that had 8 different manufacturers badges on it. Was there another platform with more? What else is out there?

I’d have to go looking through my posts history but I want to say several of hte GM platforms were more than that.
Edit: Found it!

That’s strong. I’d think of the:
Chevy TrailBlazer
GMC Envoy
Buick Rainier
Olds Bravada
Saab 9-7X
Isuzu Ascender
Obviously that’s only like half as many (Maybe GM should have made a Pontiac version?) , though still a good haul of brands.

Platforms can be a bit broader though.

I don’t know, but thank you for reminding me that I really really really want Acura’s restomod’d SLX:

I forgot about that post, thanks! Although I mentioned ‘platform’ I guess I was thinking more about an individual complete package

An Isuzu was also the original Honda passport

Oh yeah, we’re not even talking about the Rodeo even. Isuzu seems to be the kings of wheeler-dealers with other manufacturers!

I know right? We didn’t get them up here in Canuckistan because we actually got the I suzu. They’re very handsome.

This is a bit of a different angle, but what about the original Wilys Jeep? Wasn't it licensed to several manufacturers around the world, or was just Mahindra and someone in Japan?

And they were so modular - even a lot of the "unique" local variants were a matter of swapping around body shells, fenders, and hoods from different markets

I think they were built under licence in a few countries.

I used to be into Chevettes, had 4. I think if you dig in there are about 25 distinct varieties of T-body. Including a G erman “targa” and a south american pickup the chevy 500.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Pajero
The 2nd gen Pajero/Shogun/Montero (debuted in 1991) is actually still in production under license (or maybe just as an unlicensed clone in some cases) in China. There are like 13 brands or something that have produced it across 3 or 4 different countries in addition to Mitsubishi in Japan.
Baimin CJY6420E

Hotchkiss, Mitsubishi, and Toyota made them, along with Ford during the war, of course.

with Holden the M onterey was a trim level, not a seperate model

It seems like “Mitsubishi Pajero” is being used by Chinese automakers the same way startup gun makers use "Colt 1911" whether they're related to/licensed by the original manufacturer or not. It's like a standardized pattern design that every company is just copying for their own version.

Even more interesting is the array of engines that can be had in them, from the original Mitsu V6 and diesel options, to much more modern diesels, to I4 gas motors from Chrysler that were never on the platform or even from the same era.

But the ultimate answer to this question is this:
![]() 09/22/2020 at 22:53 |

Willys did make more than Ford (363,000/280,000), Bantam invented the Jeep and then they took it away, so Bantam made trailers. Ford designed the slotted grille that is, “Jeep” today. I’ve seen Mitsubishi and Mahindra Jeeps all over Asia, they made the high hood type CJ3B which is not the same as the MB/GPW type that Ford and Willys.. hotchkiss made in WWII. So it depends on how picky you want to be, Ford never made a CJ3B, only Willys, Mitsu and and Mahindra.

Also some company or companies in South Korea. Later civilian CJs have been sold at least under Asia and Ssangyong brands.
