Is the GMC Safari really cute? I think it’s plucky but maybe not cute . Did it have the three way rear doors? If so, I’ll take it to go.

I think you'd be hard to call a safari compact. I'm definitely sold on the rest though.

Compact compared to the usual 1/2 ton van camper conversion.

Not just a high top, but a pop top:

Kinja'd!!!

It may even have a rear tent extension.

I disagree. They’re exceptionally compact and  easy to park. You won't find anything you could live in, that's any smaller.

I remember we rented one for a family vacation through Nevada and Arizona in the early 90s. My mom had always been anti-minivan, she thought sitting up high was disorienting and that they would be too unwieldy to parallel park, we had a Subaru Loyale wagon as our family car. That trip convinced her - loads of space and surprisingly easy to handle.  W hen we got back, she traded in my dad’s pickup on a new... Chevy Lumina APV, not sure why not a Safari, but whatever.

When I was in grad school, I drove an Astro out of the school’s motor pool 800 mile round trip to a conference in back. It was a great highway cruiser, and I was stunned how easy it was to park in the very tight hotel parking garage.

The only thing I didn't care for, was the very narrow pedal box. Overall though, I was very pleased with the driving experience.
