My first car payment was taken out of my bank account.

I didn’t do a 0 down loan (thanks Mom for the down payment help at purchase time !), but I’ll be paying for the big blue child for the next three years. I need to take advantage of that 0%, especially since I have a “thin” file.

I’m past 8,600 now, which symbolizes how much I drive. The payment along with the $427.83 monthly insurance is gonna hurt a little, but I spend most of my non-day-job time in the car. I use it all the time. It’s dirty and covered in bugs, so I’m glad tomorrow is Mister Car Wash day.

When my at-fault from December 2017 gets dropped this December (for carriers that look back three years), I should get a massive break. Allstate (the carrier who dropped me after I got rear ended) is willing to bring me back in December, and I only paid $250 with them.

Holy hell, my wife and I are each in the $600-700 range for 6 months and we feel like *that* is too high compared to what we used to pay in Madison, WI before we moved to the DC burbs.

Is that just because of your age, or is your state particularly expensive? I’m like floored by what a lot of oppos are paying. Even $250 seems nuts. Even when I was young, it was never more than 8-900 every six months. Now I pay $7xx every six for 3 cars and two of those are “declared value” policies. Which are typically slightly more expensive.

That’s why I’m fine sharing the amount down to the cent. It makes so many people go “wtf” that it’s funny to share.

If I had Liberty Mutual, I’d be paying $819 a month! My safe driver app won’t reimburse until the end of the six months, I believe. If I had that discount factored in monthly, I’d be in the 3’s.

I had one real bad one when I was 16. The a couple of fender benders that I didn’t report. My worst time I think was a wrx sti @ 19 years old. That was 900 every six months and that was for dirt coverage. I had to roll back the coverage to make it work. When the sti and Evo were all the rage, pretty sure that insurance companies got a bulliten like anyone under the age of 30 WILL wreck them.

Had mine six months hit a deer. Best friend had his 3 weeks and hit a tree...

With 4 accidents by age 21, I’m surprised you’re eligible for a safe driver app of any sort!

Of course, I got into a major accident as a 16 y.o. driver with a newly issued license all of 11 days old - totaled an ‘80 Toyota Corolla Tercel (yes, that was a single car back then; RWD & 3 pedals ) & put myself into the hospital with a skull fracture.

That’s good! My scenario is still bad, but it was just made worse by getting rear ended in June. I r an estimated quotes for my 2012 RAV4 in April, and I was still getting $500+ around the map.

But I haven’t had an at fault since December 2017. Got rear ended a couple times since. It sucks to have the payment blame placed on me, but outside of car essentials, I’m living super frugal right now. It’s allowed me to save a lot.

Also, the safe app allows me to get insurance cheaper, so that’s why I have it downloaded.

Ouch. When I hear a lot of my peers (even ones who had to pay for school) say that they don’t pay for their own car insurance, I feel like I’m taking on a big responsibility I normally don’t realize.

I’m full coverage, but trust me, late June/early July was stressful. Physically sick, my car just got repaired, and I had to find car insurance under $500/month. All of those apps and sites that say you can get cheap insurance? Yep, $600+ per month  for the few carriers recommended to me.

I can be used as a control here: 23, Georgia, car is the same but like 7 years older (big reason for the difference in price), no accidents (also big difference).

I pay $90 a month for full coverage and better than minimum liability.

A lot of states can get away with “young driver” surcharges. I think now the rule is three years licensed and then the rates drop to normal. It used to be you’d pay outrageous rates until you were 25. I don’t remember as I’m now almost 30. But I got lucky and got licensed and insured under the new rule. But that first three years saw my rates well over double what they should have been. I remember paying around $2500 a year to insure myself and Mercedes. I kept lower deductibles, like $500, but not high liability.

Now I pay $3000 a year for five cars, two being  new, one is still my merc, two drivers, and 300/100/100 limits, plus only $250 for collision and $50 for comprehensive.

Young drivers get fucked everywhere and it’s totally legal.

Yikes. I pay about $90 a month with Progresive. Of course my car is 7 years older than your car (although I still have collision insurance on it), I have 0 accidents, and I’m slightly older at 23 (I think 25 is a milestone for cheaper rates) . Still seems like an extreme difference, but I suppose it makes sense in the lens of calculating risk.
