The “autopilot” name is deceptive enough to where it should face legal penalties on multiple fronts, but at the same time, I have no embrace for the cult, so oh well.
Does this system “read” signs, or have a database? The distronic in my modern car “reads” signs, and now and then misreads them - SB 405 in Kirkland is not 80, but the car thought so.

It’s hard to tell amongst the over-promises, frankly. Apparently, the “sign reading” is better, but I have no illusions that it’s smart enough to read “Bridge Out Ahead” or even “Merge Right, Exit Now”.
I just don’t even know how or why it’s sensible to set an A/P speed to 93MPH, much less continue to do it when the driver’s asleep. Musk seems committed to continuing to ride this wild horse, but it’s so messed up that I think they eventually get bucked off— as the fatalities pile up.

I don't get why it can sustain that speed, but it should be able to at least boost up to the speed limit of the road +10 or 15, for a short burst. One that would require driver activation to do outside of normal conditions. And requires a button press at random intervals or it goes back down to the speed limit.

It’s “supposed” to sense hands on the wheel, hence my title, but it seems implausible the Sleeping Guy is doing that enough to keep the system happy.
I know SuperCruise will absolutely NOT allow this nonsense, so GM has that bit of common sense going for them.

I thought you could only set Autopilot to 10 mph over the limit? I guess maybe that went away?

The thing is, it’s not really that deceptive. It’s incorrect perception.
The difference between the use in vessels such as aircraft and ships and personal vehicles
is that the industries do not tolerate inattentive Flight Captains and Bridge watch-keepers.
S
uch negligence is certainly a revocation of license.
Civilian passenger aircraft still like 2 up front for the majority of the trip and the companies I sailed with always had 2 on the Bridge 24h/d underway.
Autopilot and automation systems of craft are there to reduce workload and attention of operator constant inputs (which leads to crew reduction), it’s not to reduce attentiveness but allow it to be refocused.
I’ve seen some really weird shit go on with automation and electronics. Loss of steering multiple times, blackouts,
loss of propulsion
,
non-r
epeatable
faults
with equipment, system
and motors
...

I wouldn’t want a car to read more than numbers, and even then it is risky. Thinking of a car reading stop signs or lights is very worrisome.
“Autopilot” needs significant idiot-proofing, as the cult is often book smart and street stupid. I’d love to see Musk be forced to give the system a new name.

I think the perception creates some of what I see as deception. A system given a name people erroneously think does more than what it actually offers. The company does little to nothing to correct that perception.
My DD has distronic plus, which does a lot, but not to the level of Tesla. The safeguards are easy to defeat (attach a weight to the wheel), and it can be quirky - sometimes takes corners poorly, weaves around in a lane, allows far too much following distance, reacts slowly when traffic moves, can read signs wrong, etc. I wouldn’t want to rely on that to actually drive me. It’s fun to take your hands off the wheel to put on glasses or something, but I like to supervise it.

It’s not 1935 anymore. Your understanding of modern aircraft autopilot is pretty stunted-- although I appreciate the steadfast willingness to recite any nonsense Musk blurted out.

I always figured the “first road construction flagman run over” would be Game Over for this bad marketing. However, the sheer number of parked p olice cars, ambulances and fire trucks these things have run into is giving me pause.

I was shaking my head when Musk did the initial stunt, that’s a prime reason why these idiots think this is okay. It should have never happened.
It’s much better that humans have less multitasking and micromanaging the systems, but we keep a close eye on what’s going on though.

Musk would just call the innocent victim a pedo, and get away with it, his cult would probably also go after the victim’s family or accuse them of being in some kind of QAnon conspiracy etc.
He and his technically interesting but unpolished car both can do no wrong.

They’d jump off a cliff if he told them to. Hey, that gives me an idea...
Even when using distronic, I keep a hand on the wheel and my foot above the brake, just in case. It’s still a fun toy, but I won’t rely on it to do the job, and I (or any marginally competent driver) can do it more smoothly.
