And probably one more person looking for a replacement, all the while feeling grateful to be alive. Unfortunately one man (not in the BMW) died .

Thank Elon for the video? It’s from a Tesla, I think.

This is so avoidable.

It would seem to me that an immediate application for self driving vehicles would be to detect and mitigate inattentive/intoxicated or asleep drivers of large commercial vehicles.

The present technology is certainly good enough to figure out that a driver is not doing his job and staying attentive/awake. I bet he was nodding off for more than an hour before the accident. This was so avoidable,

Dang! Either the trucker died with his foot on the accelerator or the brakes gave out?

Trucks are starting to roll out with ADAS systems that will at the very least auto brake, but with options for lane keep assist, stop and go, blind spot monitoring etc. Historically though, heavy duty trucks lag about 5 years behind passenger cars tech-wise

Fell asleep going way too fast

Yep, good points. I would also be interested in something like what Cadillac has to assure the driver is watching the road. Plus something to detect if the driver is impaired or falling asleep.

I have seen trucks where the drive went for miles rolling to the right  rumble strips and jerking back to the center line, not doing more than 60 mph. It doesn’t take artificial intelligence to determine that the truck needs to be pulled over.

That is not worth it. The hell with what the trucking services need their shipment at a specific time. Safety is #1.

Some auto braking sensors could of helped like some cars have

Right now I’m unsure of plans with eye tracking like C adillac has. I know there is hands off detection. Ideally, the current systems would prevent that scenario happening and hopefully prevent a crash as well. F orcing a driver to pull over though, I wouldn’t count on that ever happening until we remove humans from the truck

Yeah I fully agree. The Covid deregulation in shipping has made for some really scary incidents with people pushing their bodies too far.

It’s an interesting question about parking the truck. I agree it will not likely happen in that the big companies might want it for liability. But at the same time they are the ones least likely to need it. But then again the truck that hit Tracy Morgan was a Walmart truck as I recall.

I am sure drivers would hate it, but so what, it is a requirement of employment. The risks are real, anybody who has driven the interstate much and seen the ruts running across the median and off the shoulder would have to agree that sleep impaired drivers is a common problem.
